How Russia Won the Sanctions War With the West | Opinion
Newsweek ^ | Newsweek | By Michael Gfoeller and David H. Rundell

Posted on 01/19/2024 10:30:04 AM PST by Kazan

It is now abundantly clear that Russia has defeated the Western sanctions regime that was intended to cripple its economy and force its withdrawal from Ukraine. Instead of collapsing, the Russian economy is growing rapidly. Russia's GDP grew by an impressive 5.5 percent in the third quarter of 2023. Russian GDP growth for all of 2023 should exceed 3 percent. Ironically, the Russians are doing rather better than those who imposed sanctions on them. In 2023, the U.S. economy grew by 2.4 percent while the German economy shrank, and the EU as a whole grew by less than 1 percent. Instead of withdrawing from Ukraine, Russia has increased the size of its force from 190,000 troops in February 2022 to more than 600,000 today.

Between February 2022 and February 2023, Western countries imposed on Russia the most extensive sanctions regime seen since World War II. In all, several thousand sanctions on Russian individuals, businesses, and government institutions caused only a mild recession in 2022 which the Russians quickly turned around. How did they do it?The Russians have a lot of gold, grain, oil, and friends, all of which they used effectively to defeat the sanctions. Any realistic war game could have easily predicted all of this.

In March of 2022, G7 member states froze $300 billion in Russian Central Bank reserves. This was supposed to "turn the ruble into rubble." Instead, the Russian Central bank moved very quickly to peg the ruble to gold and backed this up with its massive gold reserves and production capacity.

Almost immediately, Russia began to shift its energy trade toward China and India. Today, 90 percent of its crude oil exports go to these two nations. Europe, which used to receive 40 percent of Russian crude oil exports, now receives only 4 percent to 5 percent.

It's amazing Newsweek can admit all this. Yet, we have fools here still pretending Biden's failed sanction war is working.

Unwilling to drop the hammer on India and China...sanctions fail. Imagine that.

We last the "sanctions war" with Russia by the Dims blocking us from drill baby drill.

Whenever it comes to dealing with Russia and most all other countries, the #1 component is energy. If you want to deal strongly with Russia, come at it from a position of energy strength, not energy dependence.

It’s time to impose a total trade embargo on Russia. The West doesn’t buy anything from them and we don’t sell anything to them.

They also get to take back all of their ethnic Russian speaking colonists living in NATO/EU nations. Be gone!

U.S. oil extraction reached record levels in 2022, and all indications are that 2023 was even better.

Thanks for the link with the numbers.

Now compare that to the population growth (assuming numbers from the same statista.com site). https://www.statista.com/statistics/263762/total-population-of-the-united-states/

In 2022 we produced 759.9 million metric tons of oil. In year 2019 that was 751.2. An increase of 1.15%.

In 2022 the US population was 333.39 million. In year 2019 it was 328.55. An increase of 1.4%.

So our oil production growth hasn't kept up with population growth.

I’m truly curious, why is Nuland such a trigger for you and some of your cohort on FR?

The woman openly hates the EU. What’s not to like about that?

Translation: You can't refute a single point made in the column.

All you and your ilk are doing is helping Biden cover up his responsibility for the failures of the proxy war and sanction war in Ukraine. At this point, any aid to Ukraine is primarily about delaying defeat in this proxy war until after 2024 election.

You refuse to accept reality. Russia is now sanction proof. It's free of any dependency on the West.

An embargo won't work because 80% of the world wouldn't participate.

China and India are reselling Russian oil to Europe and making a nice profit doing so. They aren't going to stop doing that.

Nuland and Anthony Fauci are literally responsible for the deaths of millions worldwide.

Why wouldn't anyone with a conscience despise either of them?

Why do you believe she’s so pure and just simply because of one opinion she supposedly holds on the EU?
You DO know that she was in tight with Obama, right?

That won’t make much difference. Russia has more natural resources than North America. Most of vast Siberia with multiple time zones remains largely un-exploited. Growing economies in South & East Asia are hungry for Russian natural resources. Our leader is Biden! Buff said.
