Johnson Digs In Against Border Deal to Unlock Ukraine Aid, Defying Biden
NYT via Yahoo ^ | January 17th, 2024 | Karoun Demirjian

WASHINGTON — Speaker Mike Johnson on Wednesday threw cold water on the idea of striking an immigration deal with Democrats that could revive stalled legislation to send aid to Ukraine, hours before a meeting in which President Joe Biden planned to make a renewed push for the plan.

“I don’t think now is the time for comprehensive immigration reform because we know how complicated that is,” Johnson said Wednesday morning before an afternoon meeting at the White House. “You can’t do that quickly. I do think it’s past time to secure the border.”

Johnson said he told Biden on Thursday during a 30-minute phone call that he was dug in on the matter and would deliver the same message face to face later Wednesday. Biden has summoned Johnson and other congressional leaders as well as the top-ranking national security committee lawmakers in Congress, in an urgent bid to break a monthslong logjam over military assistance for Ukraine and the border security policies Republicans have insisted are a requirement for the aid.

“I’m going to tell the president what I’m telling all of you, what we’ve told the American people: border, border, border,” Johnson said. “We have to secure our own border before we talk about doing anything else. And that’s the message I’ve had since Day 1.”

There is nothing difficult about this message.

And Johnson has it 100% right.

Seal the damn border. Until that happens, nothing happens.

“Johnson suggested that a border deal, even one that met all the Republicans’ demands, might not be enough to win their support for funding Ukraine’s war effort against Russia. He insisted that the administration provide other guarantees and accountability measures.

“What is the endgame and the strategy in Ukraine? How will we have accountability for the funds?” Johnson asked. “We need to know that Ukraine will not be another Afghanistan.”

Ukraine aid is dead meat hanging.

Years ago a politician wanted to make a law that each bill they voted for in congress could only be a few pages long (around 5 I think). It didn’t go anywhere but I think it’s a good idea. Why even put Ukraine money on the same bill as border security? its unrelated.

Quotes from the 1951 Refugee Convention:

Article 23 - Public relief

The Contracting States shall accord to refugees lawfully staying in their territory the same treatment with respect to public relief and assistance as is accorded to their nationals.

Article 17 - Wage-earning employment
....
2. In any case, restrictive measures imposed on aliens or the employment of aliens for the protection of the national labour market shall not be applied to a refugee...who fulfils one of the following conditions:
(a) He has completed three years’ residence in the country;
....
(c) He has one or more children possessing the nationality of the country of residence.

Article 34 - Naturalization [and getting the right to vote (and buy AR-15s)]

The Contracting States shall as far as possible facilitate the assimilation and naturalization of refugees. They shall in particular make every effort to expedite naturalization proceedings and to reduce as far as possible the charges and costs of such proceedings.

https://www.ohchr.org/en/instruments-mechanisms/instruments/convention-relating-status-refugees

Article 44 - Denunciation [getting out from under the Refugee Convention]
1. Any Contracting State may denounce this Convention at any time by a notification addressed to the Secretary-General of the United Nations.
2. Such denunciation shall take effect for the Contracting State concerned one year from the date upon which it is received by the Secretary-General of the United Nations....

NOTE: I do not trust any politician to end leftist migrant mercenary-based political takeovers who has not called for invoking Article 44 to get the US out from under the Refugee Convention.

And my distrust extends to Trump and DeSantis.

The Refugee Convention must be removed from the Democratic Party toolbox by invoking Article 44.

Article 31. - Refugees unlawfully in the country of refuge

1. The Contracting States shall not impose penalties, on account of their illegal entry or presence, on refugees who, coming directly from a territory where their life or freedom was threatened in the sense of article 1, enter or are present in their territory without authorization, provided they present themselves without delay to the authorities and show good cause for their illegal entry or presence.
2. The Contracting States shall not apply to the movements of such refugees restrictions other than those which are necessary and such restrictions shall only be applied until their status in the country is regularized or they obtain admission into another country. The Contracting States shall allow such refugees a reasonable period and all the necessary facilities to obtain admission into another country.

Article 32. - Expulsion

1. The Contracting States shall not expel a refugee lawfully in their territory save on grounds of national security or public order.
2. The expulsion of such a refugee shall be only in pursuance of a decision reached in accordance with due process of law. Except where compelling reasons of national security otherwise require, the refugee shall be allowed to submit evidence to clear himself, and to appeal to and be represented for the purpose before competent authority or a person or persons specially designated by the competent authority.
3. The Contracting States shall allow such a refugee a reasonable period within which to seek legal admission into another country. The Contracting States reserve the right to apply during that period such internal measures as they may deem necessary.

The Refugee Convention by permitting illegal entry (and entry upon any request) makes it impossible to secure the border. We need to get out from under the Refugee Convention.

“I don’t think now is the time for comprehensive immigration reform...”

Immigration reform?

Immigration reform for democrats simply means to make legal the invasion that is happening now.

Why do Republicans use democrat talking points???

Immigration reform when we are knee deep in illegals?

We need to enforce immigration laws already on the books.

The reform needs to be mass deportation.

Wait a moment.
Am I misreading this?
You say Johnson is 100% right? Yet he is going along with the Dems without a border deal?

We don’t need any comprehensive immigration reform. We need to enforce current laws on the books.

The comprehensive immigration reform talking points is bullshit from both parties to keep both from doing nothing.

There's a separate bill that was passed by the House in May under McCarthy. It is an excellent bill called "The Secure the Border Act of 2023" aka H.R.2.

The House has already done their part...It's been at the Senate for months.

The Senate and Biden need to pass this...and stop playing "I got the Pen" games.

Ukraine is NOT on that bill. Neither is Israel. It's a stand alone for OUR border.

I’ll perhaps worry more about Ukraine’s border after ours is secured.

Yep. That says it all right there. It’s that simple.

“Refugees” are supposed to make their claim in the first safe country they set foot in.

That would be any number of countries between here and South America.

I hear Panama is nice this time of year.

“What is the endgame and the strategy in Ukraine? How will we have accountability for the funds?” Johnson asked. “We need to know that Ukraine will not be another Afghanistan.”

I can solve Johnson’s dilemma:

No more U.S. armaments and dollars funding the Zelensky/Biden Money Laundering Operation, a.k.a Ukraine

And

No America boots on Ukrainian soil

Follow these 2 suggestions and Johnson won’t have to worry about Ukraine becoming another Afghanistan.

It is unlikely our border can be secured before Ukraine is decimated or surrenders, or finally negotiates. In either case, the reconstruction of Ykraine is estimated to be $$$ 600-800 billion, more US taxpayers money down the Ukie toilet?…. Everything about Ukraine stinks bad, real bad.

We have to be careful......when slimeball Biden says “border security,” he
means something entirely different from our requirements for border security.

They pass 20 US consulates and 1 US embassy in Mexico on their way here. They can apply for asylum in any one of them.

“Seal the damn border. Until that happens, nothing happens.”

What they’re really fighting over is the 10 million or so migrants, who will be spending MANY YEARS here before their (non-existent) cases are heard. Johnson wants the law changed to allow them to be BOOTED from the country, but Democrats are scared Shiiteless of such a change as it would allow Trump to do just that.

Johnson should tell Biden that the House has already passed HR2. Anything other than that coming out of the senate will not even be brought to the House floor.
