Shake-Up by a Desperate DeSantis Opens Wider Path for Haley in New Hampshire
NYT ^ | Jan. 17, 2024 Updated 3:56 p.m. ET | Shane Goldmacher

Straining to recover after a bruising defeat in Iowa, Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida and his allies moved on Wednesday to shake up his operation yet again, with his super PAC carrying out layoffs and the campaign signaling that it would largely bypass New Hampshire’s primary election next week in favor of competing in South Carolina.

The change in strategy appeared to set up the one-on-one contest in New Hampshire that Nikki Haley has been hoping for against former President Donald J. Trump, who leads in polls but is more vulnerable in the moderate state than in socially conservative Iowa. At the same time, the shift could put new pressure on Ms. Haley in South Carolina, where she once served as governor.

The maneuvering may not ultimately make much of a dent in a race in which Mr. Trump has dominated polling, won the Iowa caucuses on Monday by a staggering 30 percentage points and spent Wednesday in court

As Mr. DeSantis’s team licked its wounds on Wednesday, his super PAC, Never Back Down, trimmed operations in several places, including Nevada. Other staff members were also laid off, including almost the entire online “war room” team, a person with knowledge of the matter said. Those who were cut had their email accounts immediately suspended. It was unclear how many people in all lost their jobs.

DeSantis has squandered all the goodwill he amassed amongst conservatives while he was Governor. He’s become a joke without the sense to bow out with a tiny bit of dignity. Totally pathetic.

Clay & Buck today asked is anyone in 2028 going to remember how DeSantis performed in 2024? Their answer: I don’t think so.

C&B, seriously delusional.

Well, you have to remember , that the vast majority of people are not as plugged in and following every event in politics the way we do here on Free Republic.

I suspect we are not the audience for Clay and Buck. They probably play to a much broader and less conservative audience.

I know there isn’t anyone who can ever replace Rush, but these two were far from being his best possible replacements.

The NYT cares nothing about their credibility at this point. It’s all about the agenda. Ron is polling at 5% in NH.

Goldmacher’s wishful thinking makes it into a New York Times article.

It’s not going to happen, Shane.

DeSantis of Florida and his allies moved on Wednesday to shake up his operation yet again

Shake that thing! Won't make a wooden Indian wiggle. And aside from being a backstabber to Trump and a promise breaker to the state of Florida, that's all he is. A wooden figure that somebody walked out of the governor's mansion with, thinking if they planted it in the rich soil of Iowa, it would take root and flower. Don't they test political figures before they market them? He's a stiff! There has to be a little door on his back with a string to pull when you want to hear what he stands for. /rant

DeSantis has destroyed his brand in a way I would have thought unfathomable a year ago.

Of all the people who were losing candidates in GOP presidential primaries over the last 35 years, I considered very few of them to be worth a damn in national politics after they lost. Ted Cruz was one of the few — though he’s been a victim of timing and circumstances more than anything else.

“The maneuvering may not ultimately make much of a dent in a race in which Mr. Trump has dominated polling, won the Iowa caucuses on Monday by a staggering 30 percentage points “

so basically they’re admitting that anything and everything that the pontification class spews about the GOP primary is moot and irrelevant ...
