Republicans scored massive victories in elections held in Virginia on Tuesday, returning two GOP politicians to local legislature following the departure of the incumbents.
While it has leaned to Democrats in recent elections, Virginia is seen as an important battleground state ahead of the 2024 election, with Republicans winning in the latest gubernatorial election in 2021 and political commentators labeling it a competitive purple state.

I do l ike the word annihilate in this context. :)
if it weren’t for the steal...
purple state... hehehe
Both the previous representatives were Republicans
These appear to be safe districts, so I’m not sure it’s all that significant.
Red Wave...LOL
Leaned?
Biden beat Trump by 10.1% in Virginia!
Yes, they expected it to be similar to the last election where the Republicans got destroyed. I guess they thought they could do the same thing in these red cities/town or whatever I’m not very familiar with Virginia, but kudos to the folk who came out to vote to keep their cities/towns away from the liberal communist 🤮!
VA has a Republican governor, a Republican lieutenant governor, and a Republican attorney general. Democrats hold the legislature by a razor thin margin. Democrats have both US Senate seats and six of eleven congressional seats. To say it leans Democrat is not inaccurate.
Biden beat Trump by 10.1% in Virginia!
Did he?
If ever there were a classic example of a misleading headline, this article wins First Prize.
I’d have been shocked if the GOP lost the two seats in question. They’re both in Southside Virginia, a GOP stronghold.
“annihilate”
Lol! I don’t think it means what THEY think it means....
Has a nice ring to it tho.
Didn’t the GOP fail to take over the state legislature last cycle? I saw the new Dem leader on “CBS Mornings For Blacks” and Gayle King was celebrating that he was a Black man.
“These appear to be safe districts, so I’m not sure it’s all that significant.”
Very safe districts. Not significant insofar as meaning a damn thing in Virginia as a whole for November.
In Senate district 9 Republicans outnumber Democrats by at least 20 points; in House district 48 they have an even greater advantage. The margin of these 2 wins merely matched or slightly exceeded the partisan distribution in their respective areas.
Regardless, it still was quite surprising to see Newsweek with an actual unbiased headline.
I disagree.
Youngkin (R) won by 2%, with very low turn out - less than 55%.
Trump v. Biden had 75% turn out.
If Youngkin can win reelection by 10%, with 75% turn out, then I will be impressed.
FL cleaned up its elections and voting rolls. Ds are practically gone. So it is fraud which puts and keeps Dems in office.
Do you consider the 2020 election to have been honest?
yeah, the GOP actually lost the House and I think that put an end to the draft Younkin idea. The Ds now have a +1 majority in both chambers, nowhere near enough to override a veto.
VA had Dem Gov/Lt Gov/AG, etc for many years before Youngkin, et al won. Remember Terry McAuliffe and Ralph Northam?
