Nikki Haley's Civil War Remarks Spark Backlash From Conservatives

Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley sparked a backlash on social media, including from conservatives, after she was asked about the cause of the Civil War and didn't mention slavery in her answer.

Haley, who served six years as South Carolina's governor and then two years as the ambassador to the United Nations, was asked by a voter during a town hall in Berlin, New Hampshire, on Wednesday to identify the cause of the Civil War.

"I think the cause of the Civil War was basically how government was going to run," she said. "The freedoms and what people could and couldn't do. What do you think the cause of the Civil War was?"

The man who asked the question replied that he was not the one running for president and wanted to hear her answer.

The title is misleading. It is mostly leftists and RINOs that are angry at her for her comments, not conservatives.

I am not a Nikki Haley fan, but I would have given a similar answer, saying that the war grew out of a dispute over the role of the federal government vs. that of the states.

Here are her comments:

"I mean, I think it always comes down to the role of government and what the rights of the people are," she said. "And I will always stand by the fact that I think government was intended to secure the rights and freedoms of the people. It was never meant to be all things to all people. Government doesn't need to tell you how to live your life. They don't need to tell you what you can and can't do. They don't need to be a part of your life. They need to make sure that you have freedom."

She continued: "We need to have capitalism. We need to have economic freedom. We need to make sure that we do all things so that individuals have the liberties so that they can have freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom to do or be anything they want to be without government getting in the way."

The man who asked the question then said he was astonished by her omission.

"In the year 2023, it's astonishing to me that you'd answer that question without mentioning the word slavery," he said.

The North was also taxing them on their cotton and denying them steel for their railroads.

Indeed, the title is misleading. The guy asking the question obviously wanted to trap her with the “slavery” angle. Then Newsweak calls him conservative. D-bags.

“”I think the cause of the Civil War was basically how government was going to run,” she said. “The freedoms and what people could and couldn’t do. What do you think the cause of the Civil War was?””

Hers is a mish-mash answer. She might not be a history buff, or very knowledgeable of the period, which is fine. Not everybody is.

I loathe Nikki Haley, but why was this a question? Other than to drag the tired old trope of black oppression, how was this germane?

If heaven forbid, Nikki is the nominee, she can expect a lot of “gotcha” questions from the Press.

Here is my take on both Desantis and Haley

During the first 3 debates Desantis was more scripted more robot like (he was great during the greasy Gavin debate and during the 4th debate )

The robotic Desantis I think hurt him a lot in the polls

Haley was less scripted and appeared as though she was talking from the heart during the first 3 dabates

Voters want from the heart and less scripted, we are not dumb

Desantis performs better during interviews as he is quicker on his feet then Haley

I am a Desantis supporter as his handling in Florida was exceptional and the fact he is quick on his feet in interviews when he is not scripted. He is a very smart person

Trump also is less scripted and less robotic but I find he goes of in to many directions which leaves people a little confused.

I would like to see desantis / Haley ticket

I want a president that does what he says. I believe in Desantis

I think the framing of the article is by IMO a biased writer.

She's right. It was the federal government telling the states what to do. every war since then has been the US telling people what to do. Shall we discuss Japan and ww2?

Pearl harbor got the US off its war time ass. but Pearl harbor wasnt planned out of nothing and for nothing. The US had blockaded japan and the resources it needed to fight china and japan did what it needed to to force the US into the war. a war over raw materials in the pacific.

otoh, japan pretty much got its ass handed to them at midway and the war was a bad idea from then on for japan.

“I am not a Nikki Haley fan...”

Im not either but I strongly suspect this was a gotcha question in a blue state in an attempt to make her look bad.

Berlin, New Hampshire......not really surprising it happened there.

You are absolutely correct! The yankees and the left want to preach that the Civil War was strictly about slavery, when States Rights and The Tenth Amendment were also very strong factors. Most Southerners didn't own slaves, only the wealthy.

IMHO she's trying to walk a tight-rope line of southerners who incorrectly believe in the lie of the Lost Cause. Basically, after the war and the abolition of slavery, it was evident that abolition was the right side of history. So the Confederate Dim leaders began a history revision of making up other reasons they broke away from the union.

Unfortunately, many southerners today don't like admitting that our predecessor leaders were wrong, even though we tend to hate Dims today. So Republican politicians trying to win the southern vote are hesitant to point out that the Dims were the party of the confederacy.

IMHO, the main way to know the main reasons for secession are to read the secession declarations of each state that left the union (just like the US Declaration of Independence describes why we left England). If you look at the secession declarations you see the word "slave" or "slavery", etc. For example, in South Carolina's secession declaration you see it 18 times. In other states' secession declarations you see the word only once, saying they are joining the "slaveholding" states.

I want to say one last thing

I am an average voter , like many , my political views are those of many americans

I was and still am a desantis supporter

Up until very recently, I was ok with Nikki being the nominee if not desantis

I now have changed my mind, If desantis is not the nominee I prefer trump.

I think Nikki isn’t hard enough.

But I would not mind a desantis/nikki ticket (Nikki Kamala combat would be nice to see )

I think desantis poll numbers will start going back up and over take Nikki

The only answer to a question from the media on the issue of slavery,
should be to point out that it was 11 states, all run by the democRats that seceded from the Union.
