I am not a Nikki Haley fan, but I would have given a similar answer, saying that the war grew out of a dispute over the role of the federal government vs. that of the states.
"I mean, I think it always comes down to the role of government and what the rights of the people are," she said. "And I will always stand by the fact that I think government was intended to secure the rights and freedoms of the people. It was never meant to be all things to all people. Government doesn't need to tell you how to live your life. They don't need to tell you what you can and can't do. They don't need to be a part of your life. They need to make sure that you have freedom."
She continued: "We need to have capitalism. We need to have economic freedom. We need to make sure that we do all things so that individuals have the liberties so that they can have freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom to do or be anything they want to be without government getting in the way."
The man who asked the question then said he was astonished by her omission.
"In the year 2023, it's astonishing to me that you'd answer that question without mentioning the word slavery," he said.
The North was also taxing them on their cotton and denying them steel for their railroads.
Indeed, the title is misleading. The guy asking the question obviously wanted to trap her with the “slavery” angle. Then Newsweak calls him conservative. D-bags.
“”I think the cause of the Civil War was basically how government was going to run,” she said. “The freedoms and what people could and couldn’t do. What do you think the cause of the Civil War was?””
Hers is a mish-mash answer. She might not be a history buff, or very knowledgeable of the period, which is fine. Not everybody is.
I am not voting for Nikki, but her answer was correct.
Here is my take on both Desantis and Haley
During the first 3 debates Desantis was more scripted more robot like (he was great during the greasy Gavin debate and during the 4th debate )
The robotic Desantis I think hurt him a lot in the polls
Haley was less scripted and appeared as though she was talking from the heart during the first 3 dabates
Voters want from the heart and less scripted, we are not dumb
Desantis performs better during interviews as he is quicker on his feet then Haley
I am a Desantis supporter as his handling in Florida was exceptional and the fact he is quick on his feet in interviews when he is not scripted. He is a very smart person
Trump also is less scripted and less robotic but I find he goes of in to many directions which leaves people a little confused.
I would like to see desantis / Haley ticket
I want a president that does what he says. I believe in Desantis
I think the framing of the article is by IMO a biased writer.
Pearl harbor got the US off its war time ass. but Pearl harbor wasnt planned out of nothing and for nothing. The US had blockaded japan and the resources it needed to fight china and japan did what it needed to to force the US into the war. a war over raw materials in the pacific.
otoh, japan pretty much got its ass handed to them at midway and the war was a bad idea from then on for japan.
“I am not a Nikki Haley fan...”
Im not either but I strongly suspect this was a gotcha question in a blue state in an attempt to make her look bad.
Berlin, New Hampshire......not really surprising it happened there.
You are absolutely correct! The yankees and the left want to preach that the Civil War was strictly about slavery, when States Rights and The Tenth Amendment were also very strong factors. Most Southerners didn't own slaves, only the wealthy.

********
True, but the overriding “dispute” was about slavery. There were other disputes adding to the bitterness, such as tariffs; but without the dispute over slavery, there would have been no civil war.

not mentioning slavery is no more wrong/inaccurate than not mentioning the economic causes of secession and war - a la Ken Burns and the PC Revisionists.
First good comments by her that I’ve read about in a long time...
Trump’s hero Andrew Jacksonstood with the Union, Trump wo7ld have stood for the Union. So tired of lost cause nonsense.
Yes, it was a states right issue, but the foundation of that issue was slavery. The large southern landowners and honestly a few in the north, needed slaves to keep their plantation based agricultural system alive. Nobody in Washington cared about whether women were allowed to vote, how states allocated their tax revenues or ran their educational systems. But there was a huge push to abolish slavery and Washington did care about that. And the push by the federal government to end slavery and the push back from the large southern landowners is what led to the firing on Ft. Sumter.
You’d think a two-time governor of the state Ft. Sumter is located in would know that.
Haley’s reply was lacking. The civil war was a battle over right and wrong and to purge a pestilence from the land.
It’s a politician’s answer. She didn’t want to be pigeonholed.
“The freedoms and what people could and couldn’t do,” very much includes slavery, the main reason for the conflict between North and South.
I can see both conservatives and progressives not agreeing with her remarks (not everyone on the right is a Confederate sympathizer), but I don’t think anybody really cares.
“The title is misleading”
Of course it is and purposely so. These wretched people are rat propagandists. Everything they do is to help the rats, country be damned.
