Ukraine Doesn’t Need All Its Territory to Defeat Putin
NYT ^ | 12 27 2023 | Serge Schmemann (editorial board)

Posted on 12/27/2023 2:29:39 PM PST by yesthatjallen

The new report in The New York Times that Russia is quietly signaling a readiness to freeze the war in Ukraine is both suspicious and tantalizing.

The caveats are many: An armistice would leave Vladimir Putin in control of about a fifth of Ukrainian territory. He is not trustworthy; he could use prolonged negotiations to bolster his forces for a renewed push, or to lull Western lawmakers into cutting aid for Ukraine; he may be stalling in the hope that Donald Trump, his preferred choice for president, will return to the White House and stiff Ukraine.

But if Mr. Putin turns out to be serious, Ukraine should not pass up an opportunity to end the bloodshed. Recovered territory is not the only measure of victory in this war.

SNIP

Halting Russia well short of its goals and turning to the reconstruction and modernization of Ukraine would be lasting tributes to the Ukrainians who have made the ultimate sacrifice to preserve the existence of their nation. And no temporary armistice would forever preclude Ukraine from recovering all of its land.

Heh.
They lose land, but they can claim to get a victory.

NOOO!!! war dogs must be fed. money needs to be distributed (without accountability). Sure lives will be lost and families separated but the elites need pampered. That’s the cost in a materialistic atheistic gimme gimme world.

The War-War party is being told that the war in Ukraine has been lost. It’s time to focus on Israel/Gaza, US/Iran, US/China, etc.

Is this a case of moving the goal posts or lowering expectations, or both?

Put in a division line between the two areas that held a referendum and the rest of Ukraine. Thos two areas were primarily Russian Ukies. Ukies have a hate thing going and have taught the younger generation that this hate for Russia is good.

Not to worry. The War-War party is already reorienting itself to the Middle East and the Far East. We will be cranking out more military materiel soon enough.

The line would be further west than it currently is, and it would include Odessa and all of Ukraine's coastline.

If Russia settles for what they've got so far then it will be a pyrrhic victory for Ukraine. They would still have a few Russians to kick around if those Russians haven't already fled to the East.

“Ukies have a hate thing going and have taught the younger generation that this hate for Russia is good.”

Well to be fair the Russians did quite happily starve a few million Ukrainians to death not all that long ago. So you can’t really blame them for being a tad suspicious of their Russian neighbors.

They lose land, but they can claim to get a victory.

I’m fine with that, as long as we don’t have to keep sending billions of unaudited taxpayer dollars to them.

Let Soros fund the rebuild.

Are we actually giving value to an article that claims Trump is Putin’s choice for US President?

Lets see here:

Putin/Russia attacked Ukraine in 2014... Who was POTUS then?

4 years of Trump and Putin does NOT attack anyone...

Just over 2 years of Biden and Putin again attacks, this time with a full-scale invasion of Ukraine...

Tell me again who is Putin’s favorite?

Absolutely, all Ukraine has to do is keep all the Foreign Exchange of Homos, Nazis, Globalists, Pedophiles and Western Money Laundering, back and forth with the West.

Ukraine can do gloriously until the Western Economic and Currency collapse, and they can keep all their Western Supporters in Ukraine, close to their children.
