The New York City Council pushed through two controversial bills Wednesday that will see a ban on solitary confinement in Big Apple jails and force cops to file reports for every street stop they carry out — even the low-level ones.
The two bills, which were vehemently opposed by Mayor Eric Adams along with police and jail guard unions, passed with a veto-proof majority — meaning the legislation will likely not be quashed by Hizzoner and will become law.
“The New York City Council has taken action today that, if implemented, will unquestionably make our city less safe,” the mayor said in a statement about the passage of the so-called “How Many Stops Act.”

a ban on solitary confinement?
This will not end well......................for some people............
Cops just don't care about the paperwork
I have zero sympathy for anyone living in NYC, LA, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, or Chicago.
None.

Tell ya the truth, I think I like these changes.
Solitary confinement can drive you literally insane, permanently. It is cruel punishment, if not unusual.
And who can possibly be against cops recording their own behavior?
While I agree with this, see my above comment.
I can’t see the officers complain much. They will just interact much less to prevent paperwork and less interactions keeps them safer.
See #7.
Wait, NY is banning solitary?
The DC Gulag won’t like that since they have hundreds of trespassers locked down in solitary.
This law forces them to *record* their encounters. I have no problem with that. Keeps them on the straight and narrow.
This law does not force them to *document* their encounters, in which I would agree with your point.
Solitary confinement: I can no longer isolate this convict, even for his own protection.
Street stop: That looks like a crime going down, but do I want to go through the hassle of all the paperwork involved? Or should I just drive on to the donut shop?
New Yawk didn’t learn the lesson of what happens when you make your city a “sanctuary” for illegal aliens. Now it’s a “sanctuary” for felons. ROTFL! Losers gotta be losers.
Oh wait. I see you are right. They need to document everything.
Utterly stupid.
However, I see a possible solution AND a possible money-making opportunity: Devise software that hangs off their body cams that automatically files a report.
It’s like New York and California are having a race to see who can enact the stupidest policy every day. I’ve got you beat ... No no no ... I’ve got you beat ... etc etc etc
Interesting point. Not sure how you accomodate that; if you distinguish between protective solitary and punative solitary, suddenly every single solitary decision becomes instantly 'protective'.
“who can possibly be against cops recording their own behavior?”
Agreed. Rodney King coulda gone down a whole different way.
Something similar happened in my town a couple of months ago. Perp claimed police brutality after he ended up with 2 black eyes and other cuts and bruises.....multiple police body cams shows he got tazed while fleeing and did a header on a curb.
So really, he did it to himself.
Having to document the age, chosen gender and race for every tourist asking for directions?
You get what you vote for...
“ Solitary confinement can drive you literally insane, permanently. It is cruel punishment.”
So what do you do with the violent sub-80 IQ feral who is a constant danger to those around him even in a jail setting? Properly used it’s not punishment but done for the safety of the other inmates.
“And who can possibly be against cops recording their own behavior.”
Don’t we have body cameras for that? What this law does, as I understand it, is require a written report of every single interaction with the public. Could you do that? While this may sound good, and the Left is expert at making terrible policy sound good, the result will be cops simply refusing to interact with the public at all.
I suspect that is the real goal of this.
L
Have software do that. Hang the software off the body cam. Deliver a trillion reports a day to the NYC City Council with a demand they view every one and critique it.
