$750 a month was given to homeless people in California. What they spent it on is more evidence that universal basic income works.

A group of just over 100 homeless people in California's Los Angeles County and San Francisco Bay Area were given $750 per month for a year — no questions asked.

The newly released results of the first six months of the study into the impact of a basic income and social support intervention reveal what the recipients spent the influx of cash.

...

Those who received the $750 monthly stipend were less likely to remain unsheltered and closer to having enough money to meet all of their basic needs as compared to a control group who accessed usual homeless services, the study found.

The money was given, "no questions asked," but we somehow know how they spent the money.

Majorly bogus "study."

“The money was given, “no questions asked,” but we somehow know how they spent the money.”

I can only assume they were given something similar to a debit card, where the spending can be tracked.

I’m speaking as an accountant, since I do the same with my own spending.

I had renters who used EBT to buy stuff they’d sell at cents on the dollar so they could buy beer, cigarettes and drugs.

Notice they don't tell us how many actually got off the streets, just "less likely"

Most of the homeless recipients created investment accounts with the free money...and quietly growing wealthy.

"Nearly 20% was spent on housing, 12.7% on transportation, 11.5% on clothing, 6.2% on healthcare, and 13.6% on other expenses that were not classified, the study found. More importantly, the initial findings "dispels this myth that people will use money for illicit purposes," Ben Henwood, who led the study, told the Los Angeles Times.

Only about 2% of the $750 per month was spent on alcohol, cigarettes, or drugs, Henwood said in an interview with the Times; the majority of that money was spent on cigarettes."

Two key findings thus far include that people who
received M$ for 6 months are:

Less likely to be unsheltered as compared to
those who accessed usual services;

Closer to having enough money to meet all of
their basic needs as compared to those who
accessed usual services.

results that sound good but don’t really tell you anything. An interpretation with an agenda.

Several parts of the story don’t fit well. If you hand out cash-cards monthly, and the guy/gal lives off the street in the mid-town area...probably 50-percent of the grocery stores have shutdown because of customer decline and theft. So the remaining stores might be open but they’ve upped their prices by 30-to-50 percent to make up for theft. So you walk in and buy a bag of food to survive three days, and find that what was $50 for the bag four years ago....is now $100 now.

The cash card will be empty by the end of the 2nd week of the month.

Add to this...one might find ways to trade the cash-cards to dealers...to get your daily fix.

It’s still bogus. How are the homeless going to buy illicit items (drugs, sex, etc.) with a debit card? So, a lot of these illicit transactions fly under the radar.

They get around this by buying food/clothing hard items and then selling them on the street for whatever they can get. That usually gives them enough to get their dope fix.
