Hard Times for Hollywood?
DJamesKennedy.org ^ | Jerry Newcombe, D.Min., Providence Forum

This year is the 100th anniversary of the Hollywood sign. It used to say “Hollywoodland.”

But today the city is on hard times. A recent headline at deadline.com is, “Hollywood Jobs Down Nearly 20% This Year, & Not Just Because Of The Strikes, Study Says.”

The article notes, “Despite the now-resolved writers and actors strikes shutting down Hollywood production for several months, the loss of tens of thousands of Tinseltown jobs this year actually is part of a larger economic contraction, a just-released study claims — and those gigs might not be coming back.”

I see these constant stories on how Disney is producing one flop after another in the box office. In their effort to be as woke as possible, they purposefully violate the maxim that “the customer is always right.” They also seem to have forgotten the adage of “Let kids be kids.”

Whether you’re a person or a company or a nation, you can never escape from an important principle in life found in the Bible.

Paul said, “Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap.” We can never escape the consequences of our actions, good or bad. That’s why we need the Savior whose birth we celebrate at this time of year.

Another excerpt:

“From 1933 to 1966, people of faith were one of the predominant forces in Hollywood. During that period, the Roman Catholic Legion of Decency and the Protestant Film Commission (which started several years after the Legion of Decency) read every script to ensure that movies represented the largest possible audience by adhering to high standards of decency. As a result, MR. SMITH [went] TO WASHINGTON, IT [was] A WONDERFUL LIFE and THE BELLS OF ST. MARY’S rang out across the land!”

Consider the movies of the year in 1965 and 1966 respectively had Christian themes: “The Sound of Music” and “A Man for All Seasons.” But then the Church left Hollywood, and by 1969, the movie of the year was X-rated, “Midnight Cowboy.”

I’m personally done seeing movies of any kind. There is absolutely no movie that I could be made that I would be interested in seeing. My entertainment habits have completely changed since Endgame.

Im with you. Everything has already been done. Enough great films already exist, that it would take a lifetime to watch.

Modern movies always feel too long.

I agree. We often watch older movies.

Considering that there are so many great older movies to watch, and considering there’s only 24 hours in a day ,and we all have lives to live, it’s easy to just not pay attention to the current stuff that’s coming out of Hollywood.

Given that most movies are lousy remakes, who can blame you.

What they make now is trash.

Although, I wish this declining trend would continue and it causes them to leave Georgia, once and for all.

Nothing like propping up a dying industry by stealing money from the taxpayers.

I am also done with Hollyweird. Endgame and Spiderman No Way Home were the last films I’ve watched, but not in the theater, I watched them from home.

I’m not sure if I’ve seen a new movie this year. Nothing worth watching at all. At least last year we had “Top Gun Maverick”.

I have never seen "Midnight Cowboy" and probably never will. I assume it's about midnight, but it is probably not about a cowboy.

I haven't been in a movie theater since 2019 and have no plans to ever go into one again. As long as Hollywood puts out content that either insults my intelligence and/or amoral material, I'm done.

We're watching White Christmas tonight with Bing Crosby.

I do, however, enjoy hiking around the Hollywood sign.

There are thousands of the highest quality movies and TV shows now available to you that were made prior to Hollyweird. I’ll bet there are hundreds you’ve not seen yet. No reason to give up on film entertainment. Just don’t watch the garbage made in the last fifty years.

There have been a few good films in the past few years. A couple of years ago, I saw “The Darkest Hour,” a movie about Winston Churchill, which has no nude scenes, sex scenes or profanity—and it even features a cat! And there have been a couple of good documentaries, “2,000 Mules” and “Police State” that appeared in theaters over the past year.

Crosby was a hard core, irredeemable alcoholic who beat his wives and kids

I checked the movies at our local 6 plex theater. They always seem to be....Three or four super-hero movies, a horror movie, and a kid animated movie.

Last time I was there was in 2010 for the remake of True Grit.
Wanted to see Napoleon but I can wait till it hits the TV in the next month or so.

Something I noticed last night. Barbie is on the pay channels. It is also on the free HBO channels. I thought it was at the theaters just last month!
