Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a rare apology on Thursday when a pensioner complained to him about the price of eggs.
During Putin's end-of-year question and answer session with the media and with members of the public calling in from across Russia, pensioner Irina Akopova was shown seated at her kitchen table and addressing the president by video link.
She complained that prices for eggs, chicken breasts and wings had all skyrocketed.
"Vladimir Vladimirovich, take pity on pensioners! We don't get millions in our pensions. Sort this out - we have no one to turn to," she said. "I'm very grateful to you, I'm counting on you to help."
The question reflected real concern among Russians at the cost of living, and came after Putin had already acknowledged that inflation may approach 8% this year.
"I apologise for this, but this is a failure of the government's work... I promise that the situation will be corrected in the near future," Putin said.

Putin in Rare Apology Over Price of Eggs

We have egg problems 2 or 3 times a year.
It is interesting that this post tells of Putin's apology.
Next, I am sure we will hear Biden's apology, Yellen's apology, Obama's apology, Sunak's apology, Trudeau's apology, Macron's apology, Xi's apology, Scholz' apology..... Oh wait.... /s
Anti-capitalists come in many forms and use many sorts of lingo. Interesting to imagine governments -- plural -- staying out of market decisions excepting monopolistic predation.
Someone bombed all the Baby Milk Factories?................
marcus,
I get that you’ve been positively giddy about this press conference that Putin had, where some pointed questions got asked.
The problem is that it goes against the image of “Putin the dictatorial tyrant” if his own citizens feel comfortable putting forward such questions at a live event.
Furthermore, rather than trying to lie or put a spin on it (like our own President) when asked about rising food costs, he opted to apologize, *acknowledge that it was a failure of the current government*, and stated that he would try to find a solution.
And you apparently think that this is supposed to make people *dislike* him?
What Avdeyevka doink?
It’s all about “the fun” with that one...
Has Biden apologized - or any western leader?
The complete transcript of Putin’s annual (2022 was skipped for the first time in 5 years) ordinary citizen call-in Q&A is not yet posted. Various media people have extracted what they wished. Here is a collection from several, with attribution. These are not questions from these media outlets, these are questions from Russian citizens posted to a big monitor in the conference hall that these media outlets chose to extract:
1) Yahoo — If you could go back and give advice to your younger self, what would it be? -— You’re following the right path.
2) Reuters — Will there be further mobilization? — We did a partial mobilization of 300,000 out of our Reserves that number over 10 million. Over 200,000 of these are in the Special Military Operation zone. We have seen over 400,000 volunteers since our partial mobilization arrive for recruiting since then. Because of this, there is no current need for a further partial mobilization.
3) Reuters — there are Americans held in Russia waiting to be traded for Russians in the US, what is the status? — Two come to mind, Paul Whelan and Evan Gershkovich, both committed crimes against Russia while on Russian soil. There are ongoing negotiations to arrange a trade and deportation.
4) NBC — How would you characterize the state of Russia/China relations? — These are at an all time high. Our trade exchange of energy for products is something President Xi has informed me as being of vital importance to his vision of China’s future.
5) Reuters — When will the war in Ukraine end? — There has been no change in this. Our goals are deNazification, deMilitarization and ensured future Ukraine neutrality. When those goals are achieved, the war will end. I have no desire for war for the sake of war. I have too much respect for our young men to ask them to make war for no purpose. (This seems to be the precise translation. This question/answer was reported by different media outlets according to their agenda — including New Voice of Ukraine who declared the answer demanded total surrender of Ukraine forces and Ukraine leadership submitting to tribunal trials before execution).
6) Yahoo — Concerning the Olympic committees efforts to exclude our athletes, what is your view of this — Long answer . . . “I’ve always said that athletes train for years and that they need to be given the opportunity to compete at the largest competitions, including the Olympic Games,” Putin said. “Everyone knows, whether it’s our flag or not, everyone knows it’s our athlete. It’s an obvious thing. And therefore in principle I supported our athletes going to such competitions, but now it needs to be carefully analyzed, what kind of conditions the IOC is setting out.”
He expressed concern that “politically motivated artificial conditions” could be used to exclude top Russian competitors.
“If the aim of this is to cut out our leaders and show that Russian sport is not developing or on the contrary is withering away, then it is necessary for the Sports Ministry and the National Olympic Committee of Russia to analyze and to take a balanced decision,” Putin said.
Lets see Biden (or Trudeau) apologize for the price of eggs.
Soviet central planning stronk as bull!
Anybody in USA going to apologize for the absurd cost of basic health care?

Three Thousand Russians Were Killed Or Wounded For Every Square Mile They Captured Around Avdiivka
Nearly as many Russians died in two months along a single miles-long stretch of eastern Ukraine as died in all of Ukraine in the first couple of months of Russia’s wider war on the country.
Ukraine’s own casualties have been lighter.
Staggering—and escalating—losses have not bought Russia significant advances in Ukraine since the first few weeks of the wider war. At the same time, these losses aren’t about to collapse the regime of Russian strongman Vladimir Putin.
Around 13,000 Russians have been killed or wounded in two months of attacks on the Ukrainian garrison in Avdiivka, a few miles north of Donetsk city in eastern Ukraine’s Donbas region, the administration of U.S. president Joe Biden revealed this week in a declassified intelligence assessment.
For comparison, the U.S. Defense Department estimated 20,000 Russians died and another 50,000 or 60,000 were wounded between the start of Russia’s wider war in February 2022 and the commencement of a major Ukrainian counteroffensive six months later.
