Democrats Stage a Congressional Map-Making Coup in New York
WSJ ^ | 12/12/2023

Congratulations to Democrats who on Tuesday significantly increased their odds of picking up at least four House seats next November—thanks to New York’s Court of Appeals. A progressive 4-3 majority on the state’s high court bowed to the left and threw out the current court-ordered House map that was the most politically competitive in decades.

The Legislature’s House map gave Democrats an edge in 22 of 26 seats, or 85%—significantly more than Joe Biden’s 61% vote share in 2020. We’ve long argued that proportional representation shouldn’t be required in map-making, but the Legislature’s disfigured districts were an egregious gerrymander that defied traditional redistricting principles.

A 4-3 majority on the state’s Court of Appeals agreed and appointed a special master to redraw the map for the 2022 midterm election. The new map resulted in Republicans winning 11 of 26 seats—giving the GOP a knife-thin majority. Democrats blamed New York’s high court for costing them the House even though their partisan map-makers were at fault.

If the Democrats try to jam through the same partisan map, the Republicans can appeal. So the Democrats may have to be careful. They can get 3-4 more Democrats. Instead of 7.

And if Republicans were doing it in a large state where they had a majority, the majority here would be cheering them on.

They can do it but R can’t. A judge just ordered Louisiana to create a majority black district because they don’t have enough blacks in congress based on population.

They have asked for a temporary injunction. I’d tell the courts to pound sand, as the courts don’t decide districting.

last time they intentionally chopped up county border districts to give them an advantage till the court stepped in and made it right

this time, we’re screwed...

"The new map resulted in Republicans winning 11 of 26 seats..."

That is completely wrong insofar as it implies a favorable "map" was the reason why Republicans won 11 seats in NY in 2022.

The map used in 2020 favored Democrats in 20 out of 27 districts. The map which was used in 2022 favored Democrats in 20 out of 26 seats. The GOP merely got lucky and won nearly every close race in marginal D+ districts (CD-3, CD-4, CD-17, CD-19, CD-22).

Even with no new Democrat gerrymander, they were highly likely to lose MOST of those next year. Starting of course with CD-3, in which George Santos was ousted by his liberal RINO colleagues such as his next-door "neighbor" in CD-4, Anthony D'Esposito, who is the most likely of all the remaining freshmen NY Republicans to get his ass kicked next November.

But the Rats ain't taking any chances of more fluke GOP wins and are going to rig the game to pick 4 seats or so (if not more) in NY next year.

The GOP is going to lose House seats next year in Alabama, Louisiana, New York for 100% certain and the Rats are also trying to re-gerrymander in Georgia (D+1), South Carolina (+1), Georgia (+1), Tennessee (+1) and will try for +2 in Wisconsin. And don't rule out Florida.

Republicans are clinging desperately to the hope that they will offset some of this disaster by going +3 or so in North Carolina. But don't count on the new GOP-favorable map being used in 2024 just yet. All it takes is one corrupt partisan Democrat judge somewhere to put a stop to it.
