They should return whatever WASN’T listed on the warrant!
THIEVES!
“”But the owners of many of those boxes were not accused of any crimes.””
Of course not.
The feds were there to steal, not enforce the law.
.
In a Banana Republic such as ours, the government can grab what they want to.
Who’s going to stop them?
“...attorneys from the Institute for Justice argued that the FBI “broke open hundreds of safe deposit boxes, and then it tried to civilly forfeit everything in those boxes worth over $5,000” after the raid without any probable cause.
...
The appeal comes after a lower court last year sided with the FBI.”
This happened 3.5 years ago and people are still having to sue, and pay lawyers, to try to get their property back.
Where is this “Constitution” I hear so much about on this site ?
One if the Fed comments at the time was something like no one but criminals use these places.
It’s hard to believe this is still going on but the FBI stole btc fr the Silk Road guy and yet everything carried on as usual. The FBI is clearly above the law.
Thomas is vehemently opposed these seizures, maybe it’s time to do something about it?
Lawless.
My parents used to have important papers and a few valuable items in a safety deposit box. Then, my dad found out from the bank that the government could seize them, and often did just because no one had been to visit the box in a certain period. (He was in the IBEW and probably had to deal with someone this had happened to.) He closed out the box and brought it all home. This was about 1970.
Thieves. Those items are already gone.
Ever seen the home of a cop who’s been on the drug squad? A police salary won’t pay for a Camaro and an Escalade and a boat in the driveway
Well one can hardly expect hard working agents to have time to go to the local mall when getting gifts for loved one.
Some guy robbed my apt complex many years ago in philly. This sounds about the same. Maybe he works for the FIBS now.
But the worst part is that if you sue the corrupt FBI/DOJ to recover your assets you have to prove the amount of the asset and how you obtained it. Which is assets backwards constitutionality.
Thank goodness we have Mike Johnson. Ohh wait.
Part of the attraction of forfeiture for criminal justice agencies is that the results are usually treated as found money and assets exempt from normal budgeting processes. The result can be anything from special bonuses to agents to clear abuses like a police chief getting to drive a hot new muscle car as his “official” vehicle, 24/7.
It’ll disappear long before then
We are lucky they let us peasants keep ANYTHING.
(For now. Soon we will be allowed to “Own Nothing”)
The FBI is thoroughly corrupt. It’s become the American KGB
Someone we know got robbed by a cop in a small town in a southern state. Got a lawyer and sued for a lot more than the cop reported taking from him. He lost the lawsuit of course. But the cop lost his job and that was the real point of the lawsuit.
