Congressman Kevin McCarthy is leaving Congress before the end of 2023. The former Speaker of the House announced his retirement in an op-ed and a video, offering few details about his plans moving forward. All we know for certain is that another Republican seat in a blue state is being vacated.
McCarthy didn’t leave many hints about his future in his short op-ed in WSJ:
I will continue to recruit our country’s best and brightest to run for elected office. The Republican Party is expanding every day, and I am committed to lending my experience to support the next generation of leaders.
It often seems that the more Washington does, the worse America gets. I started my career as a small-business owner, and I look forward to helping entrepreneurs and risk-takers reach their full potential. The challenges we face are more likely to be solved by innovation than legislation.
Finally, the most reliable solution to what ails America is before our eyes: everyday men and women who are raising families, showing up for work, volunteering, and pursuing the American Dream with passion and purpose. I agree with President Reagan’s observation that “all great change in America starts at the dinner table.” Despite the best attempts by special interest groups and the news media to divide us, I have seen the goodness of the American people. They are what will ultimately uphold the enduring values of our great nation. We all have a role to play in that effort.
Congressman Matt Gaetz, McCarthy’s nemesis who led the charge to oust him from his Speaker role, had a one-word response to the news:
Some Republicans are concerned that McCarthy’s premature departure will leave the GOP majority in the House at a dangerously slim level. As former Assistant Secretary of the Treasury Monica Crowley noted:
Republicans bounced George Santos.
Kevin McCarthy is leaving this month.
Bill Johnson is retiring.
This will leave the GOP with a ONE-SEAT majority.
Democrats would never do their voters like this.
These people don’t give a sh!t about us or the country. In fact, they revel in sticking it to us and the country.
Disgusting.
Despite the thin majority, America First patriots are generally pleased by the move. McCarthy has been one of the leaders of the UniParty Swamp since before he was Speaker and tried to sabotage conservative replacements for him after his ousting.
I, for one, am ecstatic. One RINO down. Hundreds more to go.
McCarthy is in the House of Reps, while Murkowski and Romney are in the Senate-they are separate entities...
So there is no whirlpool-calmate, por favor...
Can we hold his seat?
He won huge in 2022 - 68% - but, he changed Districts after the 2020 Census.
Not so long ago, in his old District, he was winning elections by 5% - 10%.
Yeah I know. See #45. I called myself a dummy. Not enough coffee today.
But there is a global deep state whirlpool that sucks in the House too.
Still a RINO, and better gone before he can do any more damage. It is past time to yank out the deceptively attractive-but-useless weeds in the MAGA garden order to have something grow that is actually beneficial...
fkm
Don’t count on McCarthy’s seat being safe, CA. has just switched over to ALL mail in ballots McCarthy’s seat will be turned Dem BANK ON IT!! There is NOT ONE state that has mail in balloting that is NOT under ONE PARTY DEM RULE!! WA. OR. CO. and now CA. McCarthy’s seat will be stolen!!
True-and feeding McCarthy to it was a good starting gesture, I think...
Sweet, butter wouldn't melt in your mouth, Dr.Monica, the Democrats would do their voters like that if half of their party were Dinos.
In an election-day commentary in 2016 on Fox News, speaking of Republican candidate Donald Trump's impending upset victory, Crowley said, "This is a revolt of the unprotected class against the protected elite class."[16]You've already cast your lot with the beautiful elite.
He must have received a job offer he could not refuse.
really? That’s you take?
I’m pretty sure Cali MAGA/repubs don’t count on anything safe-that said-McCarthy is from a REALLY RED DISTRICT!! His seat is PROBABLY OKAY IN ANY CASE!! No need to freak out now-it just needs someone who doesn’t have his balls in Nancy Pelosi’s purse...
I hope Trump doesn’t choose him for a VP.
However I am not convinced that we need millionaire politicians at all.
Much prefer grumpy normal people who have to be convinced to leave their businesses for two to six years to serve their country grumbling all the way.
Something like a military draft.
It kind of reminds me of McLovin.
McLovin is the self-appointed nickname of a nerdy character in the movie Superbad who gains the respect of his peers by successfully purchasing alcohol with a fake ID which states his name as simply McLovin.
You already know the answer. Republicans would rather lose than have to try to follow through on their campaign promises.
Amen.
“The chief liberal gains in the past generally remain on the statute books when the conservatives recover power ... liberalism grows constantly more liberal, and by the
same token, conservatism grows constantly less conservative....”
John Kenneth Galbraith, New York Magazine, Sept, 1970
That makes it a little less terrible that McCarthy is leaving early.
MSNBC here he comes. Or I guess Faux News will take him. I remember how mad that made me BITD, but now it is true.
