Nuclear fusion breakthrough: 'Holy grail' of power production is closer to reality as the world's biggest reactor - capable of reaching 200 MILLION degrees Celsius - is turned on in Japan
The Daily Mail ^ | 4 December 2023 | Jonathan Chadwick

It could usher an era of limitless clean, safe and affordable energy to meet the world's demand.

Now, the 'holy grail' of power production – nuclear fusion, which makes the sun and the stars shine – has come a step closer.

Scientists have switched on JT-60SA, a £500 million fusion device measuring around 40 feet in diameter, located in Naka north of Tokyo, Japan.

JT-60SA contains swirling plasma heated up 200 million degrees Celsius (360 million degrees Fahrenheit).

This is the threshold where hydrogen atoms can begin to fuse into helium, releasing sustainable energy in the process that could put an end to fossil fuels.

This is insane, a foolish waste of time. I watched something on TV the other night that showed dilithium crystals as a much more powerful source of energy. They had it powering a FREAKING SPACESHIP for crying out loud. They had that baby up to warp speed, while STILL able to combat other vessels with photon torpedoes.

Was surprised to see something that amazing was managed by one guy and maybe a couple extras. Good business model, keeps headcount costs low. I hope their stock goes public, I’m going to load up and get filthy rich.

Lefties may not be whining about fusion now. But as soon as it can produce economic energy, they will be totally against it. They are only for energy that works poorly and is expensive.

Nothing may stand in the way of the great reset. And cheap energy would make the great reset more difficult.

Hang on....200 million degrees???? What could POSSIBLY go wrong?

No, 200,000,000 degrees CENTIGRADE. That’s apparently about 360,000,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Geez, I hope it’s a dry heat.

What are we going to do with all the excess helium though?

Not a problem. The world is running out of helium. I think much of the supplies are by-products of oil well drilling. One reason why the Hindenberg dirigible blew up is that the USA cut off supplies of helium to the Germans, so the Germans switched to hydrogen - bad call. If Japan is successful, there will be plenty of helium for kids' party balloons.

They are going to go back to “humans are destroying the habitat of animals with their farming and their trash” again.

It is welfare. Most of the research is done through public universities, so researchers can make a career out of promising the next big thing if they get the funding, and keep moving the breakthrough date until they can retire comfortably.

My point back in post 64 was that no matter what gets posted on Free Republic nowadays it is immediately ridiculed or dismissed out of hand or declared propaganda. Way too much of that here.

We used to be able to discuss a good technical subject with input from various engineers, scientists and educated people/intellectuals but all we have now is naysayers and jokers.

It is getting old.

I can understand it, but since the 2020 election and Covid no one believes anything any longer. It’s sad.

Just count the posts for goodness sakes!

So many of the articles posted here are media echo of big government propaganda which is why so many of them are greeted with justified cynicism. Global warming. We all know that’s a scam. EVs we all know that they are far inferior to ICE powered vehicles, but their incessant lying cheerleaders still act as though they are the next coming thing. Wind and solar power or as I like to say unicorn farts and rainbows. Their expense is only exceeded by their unreliability. gun control touted as a safety measure. We as all know that’s a lie. Ask the Jews from Europe who lived in the 30s and early 40s of the last century. Oh wait you can’t because they were murdered wholesale by their government. And now Biden says we’ll get rid of MAGA supporters. I suspect I know what he has in mind. Oh and I forgot manned space exploration. Another useless boondoggle to pay off big corporate donors. Just about everything the government does is a waste of money or a further destruction of our quality of life. so when you see cynicism about technical projects its probably at least in part to bullsh!t fatigue.

Cynicism to a degree is fine. Discernment and thoughtful understanding is even better. No one should believe something just because someone else says it is true or false.

However, being a normal human being one should be able to grasp much that is true from false.

What articles do we now reject? All of them? I’m not disputing what you said, but you list far more than I could ever reply to. This article was only about a power plant the Japanese are building and will soon turn on. I’m not taking on all of that other stuff in the compendium you listed (and since I agree with most of it).

I think on this, I am in agreement with you and see eye-to-eye. I would like to see more substantial discussion on things like this.

As for the Media…

For my part, I believe absolutely nothing from the media. Nothing. I will not wear the cloak of blame for that. The media did that to themselves.

They, all of them, are no different than Pravda or Izvestia. But they have abdicated their journalistic responsibilities in order to be mouthpieces of the Left.

And we are worse off as a society because of it.
