A US prison inmate has been charged with attempted murder after stabbing Derek Chauvin, the ex-police officer convicted in the death of George Floyd.
Prosecutors said ex-gang member John Turscak used an improvised blade to knife Chauvin 22 times on 24 November at a federal prison in Tucson, Arizona.
Chauvin survived the attack and was said to be in a stable condition.
He is serving multiple sentences for Floyd's death, which triggered nationwide protests and rioting.
Turscak, a former member of a Mexican Mafia gang, allegedly targeted Chauvin in the prison's law library at lunchtime. He later said that he had been considering killing Chauvin for about a month because of his status as a high-profile inmate.
He told correctional officers he would have killed Chauvin had they not reacted quickly, but later denied to FBI agents he had wanted to take the former officer's life, according to court papers.
Turscak, 52, told FBI agents he attacked Chauvin on Black Friday - as the day after US Thanksgiving is known - as a symbolic connection to Black Lives Matter and the Black Hand symbol linked with the Mexican Mafia, according to prosecutors.

It boggles the mind
They would never do it with anyone else.
I wonder if there are any ex-correctional officers on FR that can tell us if I'm right?
Weโll probably never know if this was an organized hit, a set-up. But if Chauvin were killed, thereโd be no chance of his conviction being overturned on appeal. And no riots.
Ping
He was going for 33 like Brutus...but was cut short.
Generally, he would be in protective custody.
This is all so mundane, nothing out of place at all here. It's as everday ho hum as dogs playing poker.

Was Turscak then given a pat on the back?
I donโt know about where he is, but where I worked, they will put him in GP, unless he asks to PC up, or the authorities may simply lock him up, no matter what he wants. Each situation is unique, with its own parameters.
George Floyd swallowed drugs on two previous occasions when Police approached him.
On the day he died, Floyd swallowed a fatal dose of fentanyl (11 ng), which shuts down your breathing.
I think the prison system has to approve protective custody for him going forward. If they don’t they’ll be responsible for whatever happens in the future. Of course, they were also at least partially responsible for his current injuries. In the system I worked for he would’ve been placed in a unit for high profile prisoners in the first place.
CC
An FBI associated gang member as well.
He may not have requested protective custody. He has to request in order to get it and that’s only if it’s available.
This was no random act.
He could have also requested to be put with sex offenders or the hospital wing.

He was stabbed 22 times??! No guards to stop his attacker after the first stab ???
It only takes 5 seconds to do 22 stabbings and the inmates do watch the placement of the guards when they decide to do something.
The guards aren’t to blame.
Remember that Sen. traitor Schumer said that they -Democrats and their corrupted law enforcement agencies - could get you 6 ways to Sunday.
This men personifies evil and I hope that one day soon, he gets his in a street robbery, left to die in the gutter.
So this Mehican is a former FBI informant eh? He should be more concerned than Chauvin for being a Rat. A Rat is the lowest form of life in the joint.
