The California Highway Patrol is increasing its operations to help curb organized retail crime under a new order from the state’s governor, Gavin Newsom.
“When criminals run out of stores with stolen goods, they need to be arrested and escorted directly into jail cells,” Newsom wrote in a statement announcing the effort.
“Leveraging hundreds of millions of dollars in law enforcement investments, the California Highway Patrol — working with allied agencies — is increasing enforcement efforts and conducting and supporting covert and confidential takedowns to stop these criminals in their tracks during the holiday season, and year-round.

How will this help? I mean the issue is once arrested they let them go. Why waste the time arresting them?

How? Police downtown instead of patrolling the highways?

On the other hand, it’s proof positive that he’s running a dark horse campaign for 2024.

Problem is keeping them in jail.
CA prisons are as leaky as Chinese bio labs.

The key word in the title is “organized”.
Nothing will be done to stop the typical grab-and-go shoplifter. Sure, organized gangs make the news. But I bet individual serial shoplifters are doing much more damage to the California economy.
Oh, well. It’s all a PR stunt anyway.

Look at the bright side, at least there will be less highway banditry on the part via traffic tickets by the highway police revenue arm of the despotic California government.

Seems to me this will not go over well with most California cities that welcome shoplifters.

And during the next Kalifornia budget crisis, what is always first threatened with cuts? Police and Fire Departments. None of the insane salaries, subsidies etc are in danger of reductions.

Local police
They don’t need no Local police

“I mean the issue is once arrested they let them go. “
Then the DAs don’t charge them and let them go.
If they do charge them, the courts don’t convict them.
If they do manage to get convicted, the judge gives them a light sentence and community service.
If they do get a serious sentence, it gets reduced by 90% percent after they’ve been locked up a year and let go.
The issue is assuredly NOT policing.
