As holiday shopping begins, Black business owners hope shoppers don’t forget them

April Showers (her real name), a self-described “serial entrepreneur” much of her life, looks at 2020 as a paradox.

George Floyd’s murder in Minneapolis and the ensuing social justice movement across the country were “painful and exhausting. Very troubling and a moment in time we won’t forget,” she said.

For a Black businesswoman, though, the subsequent impact of the protests following Floyd’s death heightened awareness of vast social inequities and inspired the #BuyBlack movement, which encouraged support of Black-owned businesses.

But as so-called Black Friday arrives, with sales and promotions for the holidays just about everywhere, Black entrepreneurs who spoke to NBC News said they hardly feel the support of 2020. In fact, they say, they feel abandoned.

“Everyone was very much into diversity, equity and inclusion,” she said. “But now we see companies are comfortable not focusing on DEI because, from a political perspective, it’s not popular. It’s all unsettling. The messaging changed as it relates to what it means to be inclusive. And it has impacted Black businesses as much as anyone.”

Problem one. Floyd wasn’t murdered. He committed suicide by swallowing his stash.

2 I don’t care what color a business owner is if the product is what I want at a good price. I buy it.

Plus unless they state what color they are on the web site I’m buying from. I don’t even know what color they are.

On local radio in the upstate of South Carolina, the so-called Upstate Black Chamber of Commerce has been advertising. Can you imagine the fallout if a White Chamber of Commerce was advertising. I just find it so ridiculous.

That said, this is a plug for NatNat Creations based in Raleigh (natnatcreations.com). Beautiful jewelry. A bit pricey but the quality and gift packaging are excellent.

I don’t shop businesses because of the colour of the owners. I don’t care if they are black, white, or titty pink, if they serve the public a product that is necessary then I’ll shop there. This racist crap has got to stop.

In 2021 I was shopping in Kroger and saw for the first time a sign over some canned goods that said “Black Owned Business.” I don’t even remember what they were, but I made a mental note to not spend one penny on it. Within a month, the sign was gone. I’m willing to bet that sales for those items hit an all-time low while that sign was displayed.

Even black owned businesses can’t thrive in “food deserts” (a euphemism for ghettos).

Many black products do get special treatment. They get locked up behind glass panels. But that’s for a different reason.

I did recently click on a list of BOBs out of curiosity

Very unimpressed. At least half were “Afrocentric” dolls, beauty, hair et al There was actually nothing in other products that interested me and I thought “this is the best’they’ can do”?

Don’t run around saying kill whitey.

Well, the don't say THAT, but they say it by subterfuge:

"Defund the poe-leece".
"Black lives matter"
"No just-us, no peace"
"equal justice"
"reparations now"

The consistently most profitable Black business owners are drug dealers

Are you selling something I need and are you someone who has not been telling me how much you hate me all year? I do not care if you love me. That is nice but in no way essential. But you do need to have not been openly hateful.

Then I will patronize your business.

If you do not meet both criteria you will not see me.

It is not that complicated.

I don’t care at all about the ethnicity of the person I’m buying from.

I do, however, avoid high crime areas.
