FReeper Canteen ~ Happy Thanksgiving 2023! ~ 23 November 2023
Serving The Best Troops and Veterans In The World !! | The Canteen Crew

Posted on 11/22/2023 6:02:34 PM PST by Kathy in Alaska

1 Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands.
2 Serve the Lord with gladness:
come before his presence with singing!
3 Know ye that the Lord he is God:
it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves;
we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
4 Enter into his gates with thanksgiving,
and into his courts with praise:
be thankful unto him, and bless his name.
5 For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting;
and his truth endureth to all generations.

~ Psalm 100 (KJV)

Abraham Lincoln's Thanksgiving Proclamation

Washington, D.C.
October 3, 1863

By the President of the United States of America.

The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God. In the midst of a civil war of unequaled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign States to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere except in the theatre of military conflict; while that theatre has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union. Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the national defence, have not arrested the plough, the shuttle or the ship; the axe has enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than heretofore. Population has steadily increased, notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege and the battle-field; and the country, rejoicing in the consiousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years with large increase of freedom.

No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy. It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American People.

I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity and Union.

In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the United States to be affixed.

Done at the City of Washington, this Third day of October, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, and of the Independence of the Unites States the Eighty-eighth.

By the President: Abraham Lincoln

Glad you’re feeling better .... again. Let’s hope it lasts this time! Good to hear Piper didn’t get it.

I feel for the folks in your congregation. They just keep getting WuFlu over and over. I hope all recovery quickly this time.

I had a nice Thanksgiving with my friends. Lots of food and everyone was sent home with a lot of leftovers to chomp on the next couple of days. LOL

It sounds like you made out like a bandit! LOL Two full dinners and you have your turkey legs for sandwiches. It sounds like they cooked perfectly.

I didn’t have paprika for my deviled eggs. I rarely ever use it and didn’t think about getting some when I was at the store Tuesday. Oh well, they still disappeared.

I guess we’ll both eat well the next couple of days or so without having to cook. LOL I came home with leftovers.

Unfortunately, no. šŸ˜¢ Tomorrow is our last day of “quarantine” and I don’t want to take the slightest chance of one of his family getting sick. We’ll visit them next time we come down.

Thanks. I’m about to take a benadryl and go to sleep. We’ll see if that “feeling better” part holds for tomorrow.

Sounds like you had a grand time. And yummy food so you don’t have to cook for a few days. That’s always a good bonus!

Fingers crossed that tomorrow finds you feeling better than today.

Yes, it was a very nice afternoon and evening.
And not having to cook for a couple of days is an added bonus. LOL

Sleep well!

Like bandits for sure. I treated myself to a loaf of sourdough bread for my turkey sandwiches...bread, cranberry sauce (the jelly kind), mayo, and lettuce. To die for and I’m freezing 3/4 of my turkey and bread.

Everybody loves deviled eggs.

Glad you got leftovers to bring home.

That Benadryl did the trick and I slept like a brick. But, as usual, it made me a bit deadheaded. I think I feel better. Iā€™ll know more when I’m fully awake. LOL!

Did you ever get more rain?

I just stumbled onto this video.

Comments below the video:

“Damn if this doesn’t remind me of the one time we were dug in, & the battle raged off & on all night. It is Scary how close this is to that night. I would rather be on a patrol than dug in. This is giving me flashbacks to things long buried & friends long lost.”

It took a while for the Benadryl haze to fade out, and I didn’t get a nap, but all is well.

Except for still testing positive for covid, that is. Thatā€™s not good. But weā€™re still going home tomorrow because hubby thinks we need to. I reeeeealllly dread the drive this time.

November 25

Seeing by Faith

Bible in a Year:

Faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.

Hebrews 11:1

During my morning walk, the sun hit the waters of Lake Michigan at a perfect angle to produce a stunning view. I asked my friend to stop and wait for me as I positioned my camera to take a pic. Because of the position of the sun, I couldnā€™t see the image on my phoneā€™s screen before I snapped the shot. But having done this before, I sensed it would be a great picture. I told my friend, ā€œWe canā€™t see it now, but pictures like this always come out good.ā€

Walking by faith through this life is often like taking that picture. You canā€™t always see the details on the screen, but that doesnā€™t mean the stunning picture isnā€™t there. You donā€™t always see God working, but you can trust that Heā€™s there. As the writer of Hebrews penned, ā€œFaith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not seeā€ (11:1). By faith we place our confidence and assurance in Godā€”especially when we canā€™t see or understand what Heā€™s doing.

With faith, not seeing doesnā€™t prevent us from ā€œtaking the shot.ā€ It just might make us pray more and seek Godā€™s direction. We can also rely on knowing whatā€™s happened in the past as others have walked by faith (vv. 4ā€“12) as well as through our own stories. What God has done before, He can do again. .

Reflect & Pray

What are you trusting God to do even though you may not see it clearly right now? How has He delivered you or your family in the past?

Heavenly Father, thank You for all the ways Youā€™ve provided for me in the past. Help me to walk by faith even if I canā€™t see all Youā€™re doing.

Still positive? Hope you can nap on the drive home tomorrow.

Visiting family is fun, but home is better when you don’t feel well.

I hope that all of you have the same sense of humor as God.

On such a weekend as Thanksgiving weekend:

Several weeks ago we went to a birthday party. It was Mrs. spel's birthday party which was held in a Cuban restaurant. At the party were two, young, single people - a male and a female. The mother of the female had been hoping for years that the two would get together. As well, the mother of the male was hoping the same thing. The mother of the male was Mrs. spel. ;-) Everyone at the table were Catholics and I knew that in advance. At a lull in the festivities I got up, took a napkin from the table and formed it into a makeshift preacher's collar and wrapped it around my neck. Mrs. spel already knew what was coming because she had already known that I had been an altar boy as a child. so that she sat there quietly with a grin on her face. After the collar was in place I then stood up, went through the normal priest's motions making the sign of the cross and saying the words in Latin: "Dominus vobiscum - et cum spiri tu tu o," while making the sign of the cross as a priest would do. Everyone at the table, about 30 people, sat stunned. They were completely dumbfounded with the dear-in-the-headlights looks on their faces coupled with looks of dismay and horror. I slowly walked around the table while reciting the Confiteor in Latin and supposedly 'blessing' each person at the table! I then turned and walked directly in front of the two, single people who were sitting together because they had been, after all, friends for years. They had actually grown up together, same neighborhood, same schools, same parental closeness, etc. I then made the sign of the cross and said in Latin, again: "Dominus vodiscum - et cum spiri tu tu o," then said in Spanish "Ahora, estƔn casado/( Now, you are married,) " with a typical priest's sing-song voice. Then the silence was broken by uproarious laughter! Until that moment I suppose that they had thought that I had somehow miraculously beomce a priest! They were all high-fiving me and busting their guts laughing!

Now, before all of the hard-shell, religious fanatics call me all kinds of "atheist" names and tell me how blasphemous I am, please be advised that I am aware that God has a sense of humor. I invite anyone to ask me how I know that God has a sense of humor. Not only do I know that He has a sense of humor, He actually LIKES my sense of humor. Go ahead. I dare you. Ask me! ;-)

I thought that I should share this moment of laughter on such a day as Thanksgiving and hope that you all had a miraculous day as did we.

Now the music video:

This Video is, "Mix Dulce Desamor," by La Orquesta Caramelo, followed by the Normal Music List.

And Thanksgiving weekend is a perfect time for sharing. And how are the two, young, single people?

Thanks, spel, for the Friday Evening Edition of the Salsa Addiction Emergency Room! ((HUGS))
