By most accounts, Speaker Mike Johnson inherited a House Republican majority in disarray after the sudden ouster of his predecessor last month.
But as Johnson, R-La., tries to rebuild that slim majority, he’s fast running into the same hard-right factions and divisions that Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., was unable to tame. That’s disrupting the party’s agenda, shelving priorities and leaving gnawing questions about any leader’s ability to govern.
Capitol Hill devolved into fresh scenes of political chaos this past week as tensions soared. A Republican senator challenged a Teamsters union boss to a brawl, one of several outbursts involving lawmakers, and the untested new speaker was forced to abandon his own party’s schedule and send everyone home early for Thanksgiving.
“This place is a pressure cooker,” Johnson lamented. Hopefully, he said, people will “cool off.” […]
Conservatives took particular umbrage at the temporary spending bill, called a continuing resolution, that maintained spending at the levels that had been agreed to last year, when Democrats had full control of Congress and Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., was the speaker.
“When are we going to do what we said we were going to do?” (Chip) Roy railed. “When are we going to act like a Republican majority and start fighting?”
It’s the same complaint that led the hard-right bloc to oust McCarthy in October, the first unseating of a speaker in U.S. history, and will threaten Johnson’s leadership. …

The less legislation Congress passes, the better.
Exactly.
To paraphrase a certain movie character, Johnson went full McCarthy, and you never go full McCarthy.
He’s had the job for what two+ weeks? Seriously AP!
A Republican senator challenged a Teamsters union boss to a brawl..
Speaker Johnson nor President Trump nor any “leader” can fix the fundamental problem(s) with our nation. They can slow the inevitable destination, but the problems we face are far deeper than most will acknowledge.
We have irreconcilable differences in a swamp of corruption. He is an improvement but don’t expect miracles.
For this to happen, we as a people don't have a functional Congress anymore. I don't know what the hell we have.
He released the J6 video tapes. McCarthy chose to do nothing while having whatever he does with Frank Luntz (Ewww).
Let’s see if he keeps doing this.
McCarthy started and then stopped, after all. Not exactly doing nothing, but not following through and being consistent either.
Johnson acted in full compliance with GOP House Rules.
A majority of GOP members supported the CR.
What’s your complaint?
A majority of GOP members supported the CR.
What’s your complaint?
I have no complaint about Johnson here. But as I see it, Johnson also supported the CR. And that's what has some FR panties in a wad.
“The less legislation Congress passes, the better.”
Yup.
“We have irreconcilable differences in a swamp of corruption.”
So very true.
Including the J6 tape release that McCarthy promised, right?
Oh, wait a minute...Johnson released all of those takes the first week on the job..
Next problem?
Complaint? If I had one, I would frame it in Chip Roy’s words. Perhaps I do have one.
So-called “house rules” do not mean the same thing as the US Constitution, after all.
And of course I’d be bothered if a majority of Unipartiers supported the CR, but not surprised.
Do you even have a complaint?
Maybe the fact that the CR passed only by having more Dems than R’s supporting it? Still running the Pelosi/Schumer budget. Great progress
So what? McCarthy was doing the very same thing, until he wasn’t.
