Last week, CNN released the results of an exit poll that was conducted in Ohio on Election Day. This poll surveyed 3,658 Ohio voters in different locations around the state. The poll correctly predicted that 43 percent of Ohio voters would vote against Issue 1, which placed legal abortion in Ohio’s state constitution. Additionally, the demographic breakdown of the polling results provides some insights that might help pro-lifers in the future.
First, the results indicate that Ohio pro-lifers did a good job communicating with like-minded people. The exit poll indicates that 82 percent of Republicans and 87 percent of conservatives voted against Issue 1. Similarly, 97 percent of people who thought abortion should be “illegal in all cases” and 94 percent of people who thought that abortion should be “illegal in most cases” also cast votes in opposition to Issue 1.
Second, pro-lifers did a poor job convincing swing voters to vote against Issue 1. The CNN exit poll found that only 31 percent of moderates and 36 percent of independents voted against Issue 1. Perhaps even more important, only 17 percent of people who thought abortion should be legal in most circumstances voted in opposition to issue 1. This particular subset of voters is likely sympathetic to some protective pro-life laws. However, arguments that Issue 1 would endanger incremental pro-life laws failed to resonate with this group of voters.
Third, parents failed to oppose Issue 1 in large numbers. The exit poll found that only 42 percent of parents with children under 18 voted against Issue 1. Men with children were somewhat more likely to oppose Issue 1 than other demographics, but women with children were actually less likely than average to oppose Issue 1. This is an important finding. A key talking point for opponents of Issue 1 was that it would endanger Ohio’s pro-life parental-involvement law. While parental-involvement laws poll well, it appears that this particular argument failed to persuade large numbers of parents to oppose Issue 1.
Supporters of legal abortion are planning to launch direct-democracy campaigns in numerous other states. These ballot questions certainly pose important challenges for pro-lifers. The key finding from this Ohio exit poll is that parents failed to oppose Issue 1 in large numbers. It is not clear why this is the case, but it should be noted that teen-pregnancy rates have fallen dramatically during the past 30 years. As such, parents today may be less concerned about teen abortions than parents were a generation ago. All in all, a greater emphasis on halting late-term abortions or preventing taxpayer funding for abortion might serve pro-lifers better in future direct-democracy campaigns.
Pro life groups need to realize people want legal abortion because the depend on it for birth control
Methods of birth control average 90% efficacy. For the 10% chance they can be faced with a pregnancy even the most self proclaimed conservative are not going to think oh Roe v Wade got overturned
They’re going to vote for abortion. It’s my safety net
Abortion is birth control
Birth control has taken over as a way of life
Men are not only included, they’re solid on this.
If women voters can’t be convinced, they’ll continue to vote in pro-abort (to term) laws one state at a time.
In other words, 31 percent of moderates and 36 percent of independents are really democrats.
Being an independent voter means only two things: 1. They are too afraid to admit which party they belong to when asked or when registering and 2: They are not very bright.
“It’s my safety net”
I wrote that wrong. It is not my safety net. Never was.
In a social setting I sat next to a wealthy married woman who bitched, at length, about everything our rat governor had done during COVID but just couldn’t vote against her because the Republican challenger would have allowed abortion to be put to a vote in state referendum. There was nothing in this woman’s life more important than the ability to kill her own child. It was a very eye opening experience.
The pro life movement has done well to build a politically active base but there is still a lot of education needed. I don’t know if the woman I met can be changed but I suspect she became that way from years of unopposed propaganda about “choice” and “bundles of cells.”
The abortion issue is slowly killing the republican party.
I wonder if the elimination of late-term abortions first would have been more successful. I’ve yet to see a poll in this country supporting late-term abortions. The hardcore leftists have to be for late-term abortions. It’s their religion, even for single, same-sex women who have no intention of having sex with a man. But the rest of the country?
“In other words, 31 percent of moderates and 36 percent of independents are really democrats.”
No, 69% of Moderates and 64% of Independents voted pro-abortion. That’s why the issue passed by a large margin.
It doesn’t make them Democrats, a lot of the Independents will probably vote for Trump (polls show him doing real well in Ohio). However, abortion isn’t just a Dem vs Republican issue and there’s people who crossover to the pro-abortion side but vote conservative on other issues..
Oops, got it reversed. Math is hard...
My point is about being an “Independent”. How can anyone declare to be an Independent? If you, (not you, but those who make this claim), can’t see the clear and distinctive difference between what the two parties allegedly stand for, then there is a problem with that person.
It helps to have Old Media screaming at them 24/7/365 killing is no big deal.
Yes, many so-called moderates are liberals who won’t/can’t admit it.
Then again , we are regularly told here on Free Republic that the Republican party is not conservative. We are told that most Republicans are really Democrat-lite.
And keep in mind that most people are not as politically aware as most of us here. Many people probably don’t have a clear view of what the parties stand for.
If they watch too much of the mainstream media they may just have a negative view of Republicans , as being racist sexist Etc as per Hillary’s screed on the subject.
No. Were spoiled. Best to look at this for what it is. But that includes pro life groups. They and republicans- who never wanted their campaign issue Roe v A
Wade to go away
If Republicans are going to be hammered on abortion, they should start to educate voters. 57 studies link abortion to increased incidences of breast cancer. The reason is perfectly logically. Abortion leaves a woman’s cells in a state of flux preparing to nurse a baby more prone to turn cancerous. Other women suffer internal injuries or become infertile, a few die. The list of psychological injuries is endless. Regret, depression, PTSD, nightmares, anxiety, substance abuse, suicidal ideation. While the Democrats were again hammering the Republicans on abortion before the 23 Election, the latest starlet to come forward and describe the horrors of abortion is Britney Spears. Her book is number 1 and she describes her abortion. Writhing in pain on a bathroom floor suffering the torments of the damned during a pill abortion and then laying “comatose” in Louisiana afterwards. Why do the Republicans allow themselves to be portrayed as mean and heartless on abortion with all the the Democrats and the media are covering up? FIGHT BACK! EDUCATE THE LEMMING MASSES, REPUBLICANS! Start with three simple words and expand: Abortion hurts women!
To maintain and expand the Pro Life voting base of the Republican Party, the GOP must define abortion as the murder of a child and push for states to criminalize abortion to the same extent as the state’s current murder statutes.
HOW DIFFICULT IS IT FOR YOU TO CHECK THE "LIFE" BOX ?
Your America is SUPPOSED TO BE the same as mine.
Where are all the Evangelicals who wanted it overturned?
