House passes bill to avert government shutdown with bipartisan support

A short-term bill that will stave off a partial government shutdown for at least another two months cleared the House of Representatives Tuesday evening, bringing lawmakers one giant step closer to keeping federal operations going after 11:59 p.m. Friday.

The 336-95 vote represented a win for House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), who unveiled his plan for a so-called “laddered” continuing resolution (CR) Saturday.

A contingent of conservative Republicans quickly came out in opposition to the bill, which they complained lacked spending cuts. However, 209 Democrats offered their support and helped send the measure on to the Senate, where it is expected to be approved later this week.

Just two Democrats — Jake Auchincloss of Massachusetts and Mike Quigley of Illinois — voted against the measure. Republicans were more closely divided, with 127 voting for the bill and 93 voting against.

“I am one of the arch-conservatives,” Johnson insisted during a press conference Tuesday morning.

“We’re not surrendering but fighting,” the speaker insisted. “I’ve had this job less than three weeks. I can’t change or turn an aircraft carrier overnight.” Mike Johnson 3 This marked Mike Johnson’s first big test as House Speaker.AFP via Getty Images

Democrats took issue with Johnson’s differing deadlines for passing certain appropriations bills, but lauded the absence of spending cuts or other poison pills.

“We have consistently made clear that a government shutdown would hurt the economy, our national security and everyday Americans during a very fragile time and must be avoided,” House Democratic leadership said in a statement.

“The continuing resolution before the House today meets that criteria and we will support it.”

One wonders how many hidden giveaways and vote trades are involved. Two whole months and they get to make more deals under the desk, terrific. They don’t even talk about writing an annual budget anymore.

“I can’t change or turn an aircraft carrier overnight.” Mike Johnson”

I think the Captain of the Titanic said something like that...

;-)

Johnson played this correctly and ethically.

He had a majority of the conference before he put the bill on the floor.

America demands a balanced budget, which cuts spending.

It’s been so long since there was a budget, the Americans have simply forgotten that is the way it should be.

Shutting down the government never plays well. It is way too much to expect most citizens to take anything away from it other than “A bunch of cry-babies don’t care if Social Security, Medicare, or the Army fail as long as the rich pay less taxes”.

There is simply no way that the American people are going to embrace any austerity (defined as fewer services and/or benefits) than are now provided. Fact. Nor will most voters accept any excuse or reason for the government not doing what they consider it obligated to do. Not happening. And it’s a stone cold fact that most people will blame the House Republicans if it happens.

Politics is about what is possible, not what is right, just, Constitutional, or financially feasible.

We need to muffle (or strangle) the nutters who even *breathe* a word about cutting *any* social security or Medicare benefits.

I don’t like those facts, but those are facts, this is 2023, and some things sacred to the ideological wing of the Republican party are utter electoral suicide.

93 Republicans voted against it. Only 2 Dems voted against it.

RE: maneuvers of an aircraft carrier or of a ship of state....

Internet factoid:
stopping a supertanker that is under way at its cruising speed can take about 10 miles in an emergency situation.

Your post is correct and....

That is why I say I am tempted to send a sympathy card to every little kid I meet.

It is impossible for this to end well. We are not going to vote our way out of this.

Re: 14 - meaning that it would not have passed without Dem support.

There were several FReepers castigating R leadership about that previously.

Thought that was not the correct way to look at it then - or now,

The collapse of an empire starts slowly then quickly then all of a sudden, totally.

The American empire is already in phase one. Phase 2 begins next year.
