Grok is an AI modeled after the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, so intended to answer almost anything and, far harder, even suggest what questions to ask!
Grok is designed to answer questions with a bit of wit and has a rebellious streak, so please don’t use it if you hate humor!
A unique and fundamental advantage of Grok is that it has real-time knowledge of the world via the 𝕏 platform. It will also answer spicy questions that are rejected by most other AI systems.
Grok is still a very early beta product – the best we could do with 2 months of training – so expect it to improve rapidly with each passing week with your help.
Thank you, the xAI Team
Why we are building Grok At xAI, we want to create AI tools that assist humanity in its quest for understanding and knowledge.
By creating and improving Grok, we aim to:
Gather feedback and ensure we are building AI tools that maximally benefit all of humanity. We believe that it is important to design AI tools that are useful to people of all backgrounds and political views. We also want empower our users with our AI tools, subject to the law. Our goal with Grok is to explore and demonstrate this approach in public. Empower research and innovation: We want Grok to serve as a powerful research assistant for anyone, helping them to quickly access relevant information, process data, and come up with new ideas. Our ultimate goal is for our AI tools to assist in the pursuit of understanding.
. . .
Early Access to Grok We are offering a limited number of users in the United States to try out our Grok prototype and provide valuable feedback that will help us improve its capabilities before a wider release. You can join the Grok waitlist here. This release just represents the first step for xAI. Looking ahead, we have an exciting roadmap and will be rolling out new capabilities and features in the coming months.
According to a review by a Tesla enthusiast ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9oM0ManQyg ) the thing has a vulgar mode. And (he quotes from Twitter X) writes text which which, to my eye, looks like it must have been human-written. I.e., it’s hard to see how it doesn’t pass the Touring Test. And xAI expects to improve it rapidly over the next six months! Grok even will try to suggest questions to ask it.
The plan is to make it available to premium X subscribers, and people are reportedly lining up to try it so fast that it looked like a denial-of-service attack. At the price of a premium X subscription, if this thing takes off anything like ChatGPT did at first, it will make X profitable.

Grok /ˈɡrɒk/ is a neologism coined by American writer Robert A. Heinlein for his 1961 science fiction novel Stranger in a Strange Land.
One of my favorite science fiction books when I was young...
Elon just posted Stranger in a strange land. I guess to let us know where he stole the name of his AI.
It seems to me that the AI crowd is trying to tell us that they can make a computer think without human intervention? It isn’t possible. AI needs to be relabeled HR (Human Repetition). There is absolutely nothing intelligent about AI except that an intelligent human wrote the algorithm!
Grok is a universally accepted word in the English language.
It means to understand thoroughly
What has happened is that Musk and company Grok AI all the way to the bank
Yes, I am disappointed they don’t seem to acknowledge their debt to RAH.
42
Elon’s wonderful - the name fits ...
Actually, forty-two in the original text
40-2 = 38
ai is just a “key word” search tool on one of the most corrupted and incorrect reference data bases in existence.
Elon is quite open about his enthusiasm for Hitchhiker’s (which I have never read), and the origin of “grok."
“Grok is a universally accepted word in the English language.”
Not until Robert A. Heinlein invented it in 1961 one. I am curious how well the writing output of Grok will stand up to AI detectors. Also, if X can keep it from being Woke. If it writes well and stays unbiased, it deserves to make money.
I would love unbiased medical information, scientific opinions, and political thought. Imagine asking an AI if the 2020 election was stolen and the response was yes with all the details of who, what, and why? Or the latest unfiltered cancer progress? Or the actual harmful effects of the COVID vaccine and the damage it done? All the truthful stuff that takes months to research.
Of course Heinlein wrote the word. The universal acceptance among educated people is tribute to the Heinlein future history genius
I just re-read this a couple of months ago. It holds up pretty well today. I don’t think Elon’s use as stealing the word rather it helps cement the word in history which is kind of nice.
I grok you.
He certainly foresaw our current times. He called them The Crazy Years.
Was are living in 🤡🌎.
