Joe Biden’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is striving to enlist a diverse workforce through targeting certain demographics even as its air traffic control system is facing shortages and safety challenges.
The FAA has several diversity hiring initiatives, including for black people, Hispanic people, disabled people and women, according to its website. At the same time, air traffic control is experiencing numerous issues including staffing shortages, mistakes, technological challenges and close call incidents.
“We’re certainly critical of the FAA’s efforts—in the past and in the present—to rely on race as a factor in hiring air traffic controllers,” Mountain States Legal Foundation General Counsel William Trachman told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “Obviously we are talking about a line of work where merit and the need for skill are a matter of life and death. No one cares about the race of the air traffic controller guiding in their flight.”

Mountain States Legal Foundation sued on behalf of plaintiff Andrew Brigida and over 2,000 other air traffic controller applicants who had test scores invalidated due to former President Barack Obama’s 2015 FAA diversity policy intended to hire more minorities. The lawsuit became class-action certified in 2022.

The Supreme Court effectively ruled that the use of affirmative action race-based admissions policies in colleges is unconstitutional in June.
This last trip I heard the guy in the tower at KGON berating students both at night and during the day. Clearly the student was way in over his head and making big mistakes ‘lost sight of the airport’ mistakes. The aswipe in the tower let him have it with both barrels. The weak will wash out and things will be fine. It is when the weak are allowed to pass to the next level that the trouble starts.
And planes crash into each other.
Maintaining a society dependent on technology requires a pure meritocracy when it comes to operating the key systems. Nothing else will do.
I can understand situations where ‘diversity’ might well help a company or organization. But others just make no sense.
Female firefighters don’t bring anything unique to the fire party. A woman’s perspective on a fire means nothing to the fire and it certainly doesn’t help to put the fire out. As for dragging my unconscious 250# self out of a fire, most women are going to be of much less help to me than the man they took the job from.
So what benefits does ‘diversity’ bring to Air Traffic Control? Do blacks, women, Hispanics and the handicapped have different concepts of what two airplanes occupying the same space at the same time means? I think not.
Like the situation of firefighters, the ‘diversity’ goal is all about giving what are considered ‘good jobs’ to favored groups, not about improving performance of the job at hand.
How bout the Pass Fail school grading systems? Remember math is Racist.
Are they going to include blind applicants? They need to be included in the Diversity programs.

I’m reminded of those women who “successfully” got through army ranger school. “Adjustments” and “accommodations” were made to insure they made it through.
God help us all if “accommodations” are made for affirmative action ATCs.
And when you do fly you’re on your own until you do something slightly wrong and then the FAA comes down on you like a HAMMER!.

This diversity ATC thing has been going on for some time now.
I’ll never forget the diversity idiot that cleared me to take off right into an airplane he just cleared to land. He got confused over a simple traffic pattern.
Make the FAA as incompetent as the USPS!!! Now why did I think of that?!?!
Certainly a place where ‘diversity is our greatest strength’!
So glad I no longer have to fly for work. I pity those that must.

Oh yeah, thousands could die. But hey, as long as a brown, gay, or foreign born person was hired, it’s all worth it

On March 27, 1977 two Boeing 747 passenger jets collided on the runway at Los Rodeos Airport on the Spanish island of Tenerife. The collision occurred when KLM Flight 4805 initiated its takeoff run during dense fog while Pan Am Flight 1736 was still on the runway. All 248 passengers and crew aboard the KLM plane died, as did 335 passengers and crew aboard the Pan Am plane. Pilot error was blamed in the investigation but there were indications of air traffic control issues. Sounds on the CVR suggested that during the accident the Spanish control tower crew had been listening to a football match on the radio and may have been distracted.
This collision between two jumbo jets occurred decades before the current FAA push for diversity hiring.
