ABC’s The View led Friday’s show with news about the manhunt for the mass shooting suspect in Maine, but quickly turned to statements that have been made by elected officials. And then co-host Joy Behar turned to the greatest inspiration of some of those elected officials, who publicly disagreed with them — former President Ronald Reagan.
After showing a clip of Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) stating that mass shootings are a problem of “the human heart” and “not guns,” the audience booed before Behar went back to “Saint Ronald Reagan,” the former Republican president who remains one of the greatest idols for many modern-day Republicans. In a vintage C-Span clip from 1989, Reagan states the following:
I do not believe in taking away the right of the citizen to own guns for sporting, for hunting and so forth, or for home defense. But I do believe that an AK-47 or a machine gun is not a sporting weapon or needed for defense of a home.
To which Behar replied: “They [Republicans] revere him. Why don’t they follow him?

Who is “they”???
Taking Reagan out of context again.
Never mind those words possibly not being his own, as others have noted.
Exactly.
Completely stupid, yes, but with an equal measure of evil.
I do not believe in taking away the right of the citizen to own guns for sporting, for hunting and so forth, or for home defense. But I do believe that an AK-47 or a machine gun is not a sporting weapon or needed for defense of a home.
the 2nd is not about guns.
There is no way to quote Reagan in context of today, because he did not live in today’s Police State USA. He lived in a much freer country.
How old were joy and whoopie in 1980 when they probably danced in celebration at Reagan being shot? 45?
They’re taking that as a call for a ban for the AK-47 instead of Reagan’s (seemingly misinformed) opinion that the weapon’s not suited for certain situations.
Caryn Johnson (Whoopi) was 25 and Behar was 39.
I beg to differ.
I have both and while I lean, heavily, towards the ARs, the AK platform is quite capable.
Reagan signed Caliifornia’s Mulford Act which banned carry without a permiit..among other things. That was knee-jerk reaction to Black Panther activities at the time. Blot on Reagan.
As was No-Fault Divorce, and emptying the insane asylums.
They're not lying, per-se; they have no clue what they're talking about, and live in each other's echo chamber. Of course, even though they're just mindlessly parroting the buckets of smelly Obama they've been fed, they'd certainly have no qualms about telling a falsehood for "the cause".
AI can do amazing things.
Yes and just like gay marriage banning the AK-47 will be the end of it right?
Ban crazy people!
I only remember Clinton's "assault weapons" ban.
I’ve never worshipped ANY politician including Reagan and even disagreed with him on some of his policies. Specifically his “deficits don’t matter” economic policy which totally altered the Republican’s former views on this issue and help put us in the position we are today. It was a major retreat from prior Republican policy. They must think all Republicans are stupid and blindly follow our popular leaders without any dissent.
Either way.... the need for a gun has never been more necessary than right now. Doesnt matter what Reagan said 30-40 years ago...since then the left has turned this nation into a cesspool where criminals are victims, immigrants have more entitlement than citizens and sociopaths always deserve one more chance.
Poor thing, her brains must be leaking out of her ears. She’s trying to ban things she knows nothing about.
