'Existential threat': One Republican stunned after speaker setback (anti-Jordan Womack of Arkansas)
ABC News ^ | 10/24/23

Rep. Steve Womack, R-Ark., an Army veteran who opposed the far-right push for Rep. Jim Jordan for speaker, said he was stunned by Rep. Tom Emmer's exit from the speaker race.

"We are hopelessly divided. We are -- we are struggling to find our way," he told ABC's Rachel Scott. The people that are involved in these proceedings are hell-bent on making sure that if it's not their guy, their pick, nothing else matters." "We are hellbent on letting the perfect, or the selfish, get in the way of the good," he said.

Scott asked Womack, a six-term veteran, if he saw a way out of the chaos.

"I haven't seen it," he said. "To continue to go through this exercise is, I think, an existential threat to the constitutional republic," he said.

As Republicans gathered for yet another candidate forum Tuesday night, it's still not clear that any candidate can garner 217 votes on the House floor.

That's led to even more chatter around temporarily empowering Speaker Pro Tempore Patrick McHenry through a resolution vote on the floor.

"McHenry should be able to keep this going," former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said of the temporary speaker.

Meanwhile, Rep. Ken Buck, R-Colo., one of the eight GOP lawmakers who voted to oust McCarthy, told Scott he doesn't regret his decision that led to the last three weeks of gridlock.

"I regret not doing it in January, to solve this issue in January, rather than in October," he said.

Dragging this out is NOT good for America, and especially not for us Republicans.
We are starting to look like a bunch of chickens without heads aimlessly running around bumping into doors and walls... while the world is at war and our allies are being massacred by islamo-fascists.

I am for the party OF LAW AND ORDER. Does anyone remember that?
It was the Republican motto in the good old days.

What I see now in the House is definitely not ORDER!
It’s clownish chaos. The majority of Americans will soon start to think we are not a serious party worth voting for.

We are shooting ourlseves in the foot. Its’a shame.

Suck and tired of people sanctimoniously hiding behind their military service as though that gives them some moral superiority over regular Americans.

Yes, if the feds just stopped spending all money but kept revenues coming in, then in about five years the national debt could be completely erased.

If even one year passed without any of the usual geyser of spending for any and all ridiculous things in the world and extending to interstellar space outside of our solar system (viz., Voyagers 1 and 2), which our government participates in, then a significant dent in our national debt could be erased.

But I don't think deficit hawks and austerity people, Trump even, are vocal enough about the tremendous BENEFITS that would immediately accrue were we to institute a single balanced budget this year.

It would be such a powerful signal to the stock market and the economy as a whole that a huge boom would follow over the next two years or more.

If more drastic (sic) budget cuts (say we only finance ONE SIDE of a war, not BOTH SIDES as we are now doing in Israel) of 30 percent or so, then, again, the powerful signal this would send would far exceed the dollar amounts saved and the amount of debt avoided.

We need to focus on the huge and almost immediate effects an austerity campaign would cause, and not be afraid of it.

On the contrary, we should embrace austerity. It would have huge salutary effects on our country, and right away.

Sadly, democrats will soon be voting with Rinos to get a speaker in place. They are all losing too much money without money flowing freely again

Jordan had more support and more GOP votes than either Scalise or Emmer. Maybe it’s time for Womack and the others who opposed Jordan to think about what’s best for the people who voted them into office.

Just because you’re a lost fool in the super monitory, 9 to 1 is not a hopelessly divided party.

I loveJordan (my congressman). But he’s right where he’s needed in the investigations
McHenry should give it a try. He had the cojones to evict Pelosi and Hoyer

“...Its’a shame....”

I don’t agree. The democrats are in lock step and vote as a block. Anyone who even thinks about differing is severely punished. That is what is a threat to democracy.

Our side has differences, primarily between the establishment Republicans and the MAGA Republicans with some moderates sprinkled in. It is democratic to work through the differences and find a position to agree upon, a place both sides will find some good, some bad.
