A Washington state senator was arrested at Hong Kong Airport and faces up to 14 years in jail after discovering mid-flight he had brought his gun with him on the plane.
Longview Republican Jeff Wilson was flying with his wife Trisha to the Chinese city at the start of a five-week vacation in South-East Asia when he realized his mistake.
Reaching into his hand luggage for a 'piece of gum' he discovered the firearm in there as well which had also escaped the attention of security staff when he set off from Portland in Oregon.
'It was an honest mistake, and I expect the situation to be resolved shortly,' he wrote on his website.
But he was arrested on arrival in the repressive former colony, thrown into jail and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm.
The senator, who was elected in 2020, denied reports that the weapon was discovered during a search on arrival, insisting he 'immediately went to customs officials and called their attention to the issue', at the end of the 15-hour flight.
He said the revolver was unloaded and is registered in Washington, where he holds a concealed carry license.
But he faces up to 14 years in one of Hong Kong's 'correctional facilities' and a fine of $12,800 for arriving with a firearm not registered in the Chinese territory.
Private ownership of guns is outlawed by the Chinese Communist Party in the tightly governed territory.
The city's Commissioner of Police only grants them to police officers, armed security guard services and operators of exclusive shooting range clubs.
Wilson has been a strong pro-gun advocate in his native state and sponsored a law this summer which made it easier for Washington's museums to obtain historic firearms without the need for background checks.

Bullfeathers!
You’re going to several foreign countries, on a 5 week trip, and you just take a bag with whatever is in it?
No, you start with an empty suitcase/bag, and carefully plan every item you put in it, given the countries have strict laws, and enforce them.
Not buying the “easy to forget” line here for a second.
The guy either got caught doing something he shouldn’t have, or he’s a complete moron, and deserves what he’s going to get.
I run with the personal responsibility crowd, not the blame others faction
“he’s a complete moron”
There’s no doubt about that. AND, he’s in a State Legislature. We sure do elect our best and brightest.
HELLO——TSA-——HELLO-—TSA——
WHAT KIND OF SCREENING DID YOU DO??????
Visit the country know the law.
I fly a lot. It happens all the time. My small home airport has about 25 citations a year for people forgetting to leave their firearms at home.
A state Senator wouldn’t be able to pass through TSA. I have seen a governor walk through without metal detectors before though.
Do these people remember where the Firearm is when they are getting mugged or someone is breaking down the door to their house ?
Classic idiocy. You start with an empty bag and start putting stuff in. “Oh look, here’s my pistol, guess I’ll add in also”
Good for them. You follow the rules of the country you travel to. Why do you think it’s horrible? He’s not special in Hong Kong.
LOL !!! And unloaded at that. I guess he was planning on Pistol whipping them.
I think I do understand what you are talking about.
I’m pointing out he seems to be part of the Satanic Cabal, as you call it.
My comment had nothing to do with him making a mistake and accidentally taking the gun.
Seems lately there are some folks who shouldn’t even be around guns when they don’t even know they’re carrying.
Throw it in the trash can! That’s what Hunter would do. At most all you are going to get a sternly worded letter.
Just that Oregon got along fine with their biennial legislative schedule. Then it was deemed urgent that they meet annually....seemed that taking people’s rights was moving too slowly. Now, it’s annual, and with an “emergency“ rider, they can do pretty much anything they please. Five weeks off? Take five years, please.
“Why was he meeting Chicoms?”
Perhaps you haven’t noticed, but China ships stuff to the USA every so often. Although one would think that would be handled on the federal level. I guess these state people have to get in on the junkets as well.
Too bad it isn’t like in the movies where he can show his congressional ID and declare “DIPLOMATIC IMMUNITY”.
Your range bag is your range bag.
Your air travel bag is your air travel bag.
Remember the words of the pre-salvation George Wallace. Segregation now, segregation for ever. Or, if you favor the offspring over the governor, you got to keep them separated.
Carrying off body is a poor practice, avoid carrying a weapon or ammo in anything other than your designated range bag.
No reason for a State Senator to be traveling to Shanghai like this to meet with the Chinese Communist Party.
Even if he’s on the Port Board or whatever.
Oh now I see, my apologies. I shouldn’t have been so impulsive in my posting to you. I assumed you were with the crowd whose mission is to tear down traditional American culture.
You’re right, if he was doing deep state deeds it’s a different story entirely.
Plenty of women are cited for forgetting their pistol was in their purse. As I said before, it can easily happen.
I have seen a frequent flyer accidentally forgot his pistol in his bag that was caught in TSA. He was given a ticket by the local police, escorted to his car where he could leave his weapon, and then allowed back to the terminal and board the flight.
