—”They manage to achieve quite a level of “purity of essence” (take a look at their voting habits, nearly 100% of their members vote in almost 100% lockstep).”

True.

Republicans have a slight numerical advantage, yet they lack a critical mass.

LBJ famousilous said of J. Edgar Hoover. “Well, it’s probably better to have him inside the tent pissing out, than outside the tent pissing in.”

No. I'm the one who said that Gaetz was in no position to "whip" 218 votes. You can't even "see" correctly what I posted.

I meant whip 218 votes now to get a new Speaker in.

You did say, literally, "The plan was to vacate McCarthy, put the conference in the the standard position to vote for a speaker and then whip up the vote and try to win behind some other suitable candidate who doesn't want to spend our country into oblivion."

I don't know if you're saying whip the vote for Speaker or whip the vote in general, but neither is going to happen now.

Geez, the leadership in a position of power whipping up votes to see who should be in leadership.

The Whip is part of the leadership. Once the Speaker and the Whip are chosen they "whip" the votes for the measures the leadership prefers. No leadership -- no rewards or penalties -- no whipping. Matt Gaetz or any other backbencher isn't going to "whip" 218 votes for anything.

Our current leadership doesn't play hard ball with the president and the Senate. It takes all three, both legislative bodies and the president to get something done.

The Biden administration manages to get around Congress all the time. With a 9 vote margin there are limits to what McCarthy could do.

Budget negotiations are a complicated process. You have to play the long game, not shoot yourself in the foot if it's not going your way early on.

So you are mad at Gaetz for doing what he said he would do? I am confused. Mccarthy was a disaster. I do not mind at all what is going on. Screw them.

Thought: Jim Jordan is the best candidate for Speaker of the House.

Gaetz should be praised

You spelled hung wrong. He's no Conservative. All he is is a big mouth turd.

I'm no fan of McCarthy, but you don't remove someone in leadership without a plan for replacement. Because of his actions the Speakership could very well fall to the Democrats. Great idea.

Whip(verb) the vote for speaker. Build a coalition. The candidates and whatever team they have would need to do that.

Yes, Biden can get around Congress, but our leadership can't use its 9 vote advantage. That was our leadership alright.

Governance to me is that ALL those elected officials (all 537 of them), through the passage and enforcement of laws, keep the citizenry safe, secure, honest, and profitable. That they (R's and D's alike) provide an environment where citizens can enjoy life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness in a fair and just system!

What's your definition?

Hey look!

Johnson got the votes. It was unanimous.

Gaetz did well.
