The horrific terrorist attack on unarmed Israelis near the border of Gaza shows how useful and effective militias can be against lightly armed and armored raiding forces.
When men lived in small communities, every man was expected to aid in the defense of the community against outside forces, which amounted to everyone outside the tribe or nation. A militia is simply local men working together to protect against the threat of others who want to kill, rape, loot and destroy. Militias can band together to form armies, but they need more training to work effectively as a larger force. When armies successfully destroy a tribe’s or nation’s enemies, people can be lulled into believing militias are not necessary or useful.
In the early history of the United States, militias were primarily needed to defend against raids by Indian tribes/other nations. A militia does not guarantee success. Militias gave a community a chance to defend themselves. With no defensive force, a community was vulnerable to raids from whoever found them an inviting target. There are many times when raiders can be defeated by a lightly armed force with relatively low levels of organization and training. Armed citizens can be a greater deterrent than police. The United States has an excellent core of people with military and reserve experience to draw on for leadership.
The primary advantage of a militia is it is always there. It is reasonably ready to respond quickly. A militia can slow down an attack and defend against a threat until a larger force can relieve it. Police are not equipped or manned to deal with organized raids. There is roughly one police officer per several hundred citizens.

We are going to need to revisit this before too much longer.
Ping!
It’s the same problem everywhere.
It’s not realistic to have law enforcement or security personnel, everywhere at all times. It’s not realistic to have law enforcement when civil society breaks down (think Katrina or LA Riots - even here in the US).
Example, the school resource officer that has become common today. One person CANNOT even remotely cover the area of a small school. In fact, anyone serious about an attack would simply walk up to him and shoot him first (say in between classes when many are moving around). If there is an attack, the best he can realistically do is report to whoever is reacting to the threat, but other than an idiotic suicidal “bum rush” that officer can’t effectively do much. That’s why ridiculing them (the cop) post attack isn’t right either. How would security work at schools? If you had multiple teachers/staff armed who are spread out in the school and likely at the right time and place to react if something does happen. If the attacker does not know who is armed (also acts as a deterrent). But that is not something we would do.
You are responsible for your safety and security. The idea that government does all that for you only works as long as the lights are on and there’s no angry mobs in the street, which does happen even in the US.
Very good!
Hundreds of schools are doing it.
Great post. I don’t spend much time on FR anymore but I browse and share good content.
I’d post it on TwitterX too but I’m permabanned.

4.7 LEVÉE EN MASSE
A levée en masse is a spontaneous uprising of the inhabitants of non-occupied territory
who, on the approach of the enemy in an international armed conflict, take up arms to resist the
invading forces, without having time to form themselves into regular armed units.
Participants in a levée en masse are entitled to the privileges of combatant status, provided that
they carry their arms openly and respect the laws and customs of war. (p 124, DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE LAW OF WAR MANUAL)

I’m 2/3 through a new novel, thanks for asking!
This is the most explosive revelation of the attacks.
Until 10/7, I had no idea Israel had willingly made itself so vulnerable.
Same here. I thought the Israeli people were armed to the teeth.
When I was in high school, many of the students carried guns, for the gun club or for deer hunting after school let out.
I’ve missed you, Matt.
It shows the problems of perspective. I have known of this for decades. Israel has very strong restrictions on firearms ownership and carry. I assumed most people knew it.
Another thing it shows is the power of media and images. There are lots of images of Israeli reservists, in civilian clothing, carrying firearms. They are required to do so as part of their military training and service during their military obligation. As I recall, the mandatory service is 2 years and 8 months.
The images make it appear civilians in Israel are commonly armed. What they show is people during military duty in civilian clothes.
Everything breaks down the the individual. The Founders knew this.
Political power... starts with one person.
Self Defense. You are your own best first responder.
Productivity. One person profiting from the efforts of their own labor.
Etc...
The further we get away from this, the worse off our Country... and other Countries, have gotten.
Sure... band together for common causes... but never lose that primacy of the Individual or you end up with sh*t like Hamas being able to easily slaughter disarmed sheep.
Or our own government being able to put political prisoners in jail with impunity...
..................
There have been several reports of Kibbutz militias successfully defending themselves. What seems to have been missing was an IDF presence without which armed civilians are less effective.
