France will begin withdrawing its troops from coup-hit Niger this week after President Emmanuel Macron said last month he refused to be "held hostage" by the putchists and was ending military cooperation with the West African country.
The decision to pull 1,500 troops from Niger leaves a gaping hole in Western efforts to counter a decade-long Islamist insurgency. It also deals a huge blow to French influence in the Sahel and could allow Russia to expand its sway over the region's vast, insecure scrublands.
In a statement on Thursday, the French Armed Forces Ministry said the troops would return to France and that the military exit should be complete by the end of the year.

Most hostage situations that I’m aware of make it very hard to simply ‘withdraw’ from.

Going to be interesting, does Niger tell the Neocons to also get lost, or does Niger allow the Neocons to stay.
In the first scenario, the Neocons will have to decide whether they really want to start another war, in a country that is VERY HOSTILE to the West.
In the second scenario the Frogs will wondering whether we were in on the coup, considering that we trained Niger’s military, and we get to stay. I could see them getting a bit angry over this apparent double-cross.
The Russians will supply pretty much everything Niger will need, including military assistance. How the BRIChinaS imperialists handle Africa will be interesting to watch. The Western imperialists have trans tyrannied themselves off the continent.
Russia must be chomping at the bit here.
I can’t remember any modern day nation that got a long term deal out of the African continent.

China already has a model of Chinese Security protected townships that are successful at employing the productive Africans in relative safety. They may extend that model.
