New York Rep. Mike Lawler on Sunday warned that hard-line Republican colleague Matt Gaetz's plan to call a vote on removing Speaker Kevin McCarthy would be "destructive to the country" and further delay conservatives' work on long-term government funding bills.
"Nobody in our conference disagrees with the need to do single-subject spending bills. Nobody disagrees with the need to cut spending," Lawler told ABC "This Week" co-anchor Jonathan Karl. "In fact, it's one of the biggest reasons why I ran."
Gaetz, in a separate interview on "This Week," denounced a temporary funding bill passed by Congress on Saturday to avert a partial government shutdown, arguing that it didn't do enough to change the culture of spending in Washington.
He said he would seek to remove McCarthy this week for backing the bill, which will fund the government through mid-November.
Lawler, a more moderate member of the GOP conference, defended the legislation as the "only responsible thing to do" to allow the party more time to finish individual spending proposals rather than the massive, all-in-one packages of past years.
"When you're trying to break the system, when you're trying to reform it, it takes time," he said. "We have been doing the work over the last few months, going line by line, budget bill by budget bill, finding ways to cut spending and reform the system. But we were not able to complete that work by Sept. 30, which was the end of the fiscal year. And so, to shut down the government would inflict pain on the American people."

Yahoo News considers Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, mitt Romney, Paul Ryan and ilk “moderate republicans”. Yahoo news is delusional
Don’t be fooled. Anyone can be replaced. Businesses do it all the time.
Destructive for McCarthy.
Ride the fence.. Go along to get along..
THAT’S WHO THE GOP IS!!
Get off the deadbeat fence... Work for the people!!!! Let the gov shut down!!
Buck the system for once!!!
Another name for a moderate Republican at a time when the country is being destroyed by Democrats is quisling.
Actually, no.
Most dems have been conditioned to accept the status quo as a condition for their core beliefs and brainwashed into believing that the radicals have their interests at heart.
This has been evolving since the 60s. The 'radical' aspect merely bided its time & thrust itself into the power vacuum left by clintoons.
The pathetic aspect is that most republicans don't see the radicals for what they are and are complicit in their ascension.
We better organize, and YESTERDAY, or they WILL achieve their goals. IMHO
The GOP has been called the stupid party. They just proved it. Newt taught them how to win in 1994. They have forgotten.
At this point, the entire federal government is destructive to the country.
It all needs to be removed.
Representative Lawler, and others like him, can’t see the forest for the trees. Conservatives are tired of their never ending excuses and whining and “wait for this” or “wait for that” approach to America’s deep seated problems.
On the eve of revolution, Gaetz is right, McCarthy must go!
Yep.
I would sleep better if I knew they there neutered. Some small portions of the “deep state” probably need preservation. (like in formaldehyde)
Destroying this country has been the constant passtime of leftist politics and republican spectators.
“Moderate Republicans” are all FOS.
“I still cherish the look of utter surprise on Eric’s mug when he was successfully primaried.”
Yes. The shock that reverberated through the Establishment was only exceeded by Trump’s victory in 2016.
And they have since worked VERY diligently to ensure that no such surprises EVER occur again.
I’ll remind everyone that Trump endorsed McCarthy for speaker.
That said, Ukraine funding has been withheld from this CR, so I don’t know what people were expecting to get with only a minuscule house majority. As I understand, they are tying any more Ukraine money to border enforcement money. That seems like a pretty solid leverage point and an offer that Democrats would be fools to refuse, which they probably would anyway. If so, we’ll at least get CR’s no more Ukraine funding, and we’ll get the political argument of saying that Democrats have openly refused to try to fix the border problem.
They have infiltrated every aspect of our lives. It's going to be hard to even find a starting point because there are so many tentacles. Voting is not going to get us out of this mess. What will be the final straw that breaks the camels back? It's not far off.
Ironically, that's not the case at all.
If the Republicans had a 40-seat majority in the House, Representatives like Matt Gaetz would be nothing more than fringe lunatics. Gaetz only has any leverage because the Republican majority is so narrow.
Never heard from this guy during the summer of love, or about the ESG/DIE communist infiltration of our businesses and schools nor did I hear this guy speak out about the political cancellation of republican’s bank accounts.
But suddenly trying to oust the GOP speaker who cut a deal with the Dems and funded a disastrous Ukrainian war when he said he wouldn’t is a bridge too far?!
STFU
I think the last moderate Dem was Zel Miller.
