Gaetz’s plan to oust McCarthy meets chilly Dem reception (Dems to bail out McCarthy)
Axios ^ | 10/1/2023 | Andrew Solender

Posted on 10/01/2023 4:50:53 PM PDT by Alter Kaker

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) wants to remove House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) for working across the aisle to stop a government shutdown — but some Democrats are not on board.

Why it matters: As Axios has previously reported, Gaetz will likely need the vast majority of Democrats to vote with him, barring an unprecedented GOP uprising against McCarthy.

Driving the news: Gaetz said during an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday that he planned to file a motion to vacate against McCarthy this week.

What they’re saying: "I'm not going to follow Matt Gaetz to Peter Luger's Steakhouse,” said Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.), a member of the Progressive Caucus.

Cohen said McCarthy “shouldn't be put out” for putting a bipartisan stopgap funding bill on the floor: “He did the right thing … and I'll definitely vote not to vacate. I expect a good number of Democrats will as well."

"I see almost no way that Matt gets most of the Dems,” said one senior House Democrat, speaking on the condition of anonymity. “Many will vote present if they don't vote No on [House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries’] recommendation.” Yes, but: Jeffries has so far declined to weigh in on a motion to vacate, and some moderate Democrats who might be inclined to save McCarthy are keeping their powder dry for the moment.

"I'm withholding any comment or speculation until the hypothetical becomes the real," said Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Minn.). "So far, we've seen a lot of hat but no cattle." “I’m waiting,” said Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-Fla.). Many Democrats are expected to follow Jeffries’ lead: “Most will do whatever Hakeem tells us to do,” said the senior House Democrat.

And they will.

He broke from the pack and will be punished.

Mitch, Lindsey, and McCarthy see their success tied to Biden’s success.

He could have endorsed one of the fiscally conservative nominees. He didn’t. Why not.

Because there are 220+ GOP House members, and none of those nominees had more than a couple of dozen supporters.

.

Joe gets what he wants in DC, and McCarthy will see he gets it.

Just like Mitch and Lindsey.

Politico and Axios are web offshoots of The Washington Post, founded by two former politics reporters/editors.

They have plenty of access.

Last year was the last time they were going to give Joe Biden everything he wants.

Guess what, they’re going to do it again. Deep State.

OBVIOUSLY McCarthy starts with 212 votes from the Democrat side.

He needs six Republicans. NINETEEN Republicans voted to block a bill banning drag shows and pride events at military facilities.

How do you imagine this is going to turn out?

McCarthy has the semi-solid support of the Uniparty faction.

but the Dems response to defend McCarthy is telling

And what does it tell you?

That the GOP is a fake organization which should be eradicated as soon as possible?

If the Dem’s bail out McCarthy, McCarthy becomes their bitch.

Wouldn’t that be great? A supposed “Conservative Speaker of the House” being saved and controlled by the Democrats.

Then again, most of those clowns have no morals or integrity anyway, all they care about is the money. He wouldn’t care one bit.

I don’t see the Democrats helping McCarthy or any Republican in any way. Especially when the Republicans are fighting amongst themselves.

I agree.

While McCarthy needs to realize that the Dems will win if we cave, Gaetz is behaving a meth head. Again.

For pity sake, GOPers, find a way out of this that doesn't involve a public divorce during an election year.

He’s always been a deal maker, not a trouble maker.

momincombatboots .... if you haven’t figured it out by now, Pres Trump plays the hands he is dealt. He knows that at the end of the day, he has to play nice with a POS like Graham. He has to.

Graham is a whisper away from being a Democrat. He’ll vote with the Democrats in a heartbeat and say that it was bi-partisanship and working across the aisle.

But Pres Trump doesn’t, nor can he, tell the people of South Carolina who to vote for. He’ll show support for folks when the time is right. The machine in SC made sure that that piece of trash Mace won an election. If anyone has faith in any election, at any level, these days they need to have their heads examined.

The same goes for McCarthy. Pres Trump knew McCarthy was going to be the Speaker, why make an enemy when you don’t need one.

Many on here run their mouth about how Pres Trump supported McDaniel. The people of the RNC voted for her, not you or me. Pres Trump wasn’t going to change the vote of one person in the RNC apparatus to support someone like Zeldin or anyone else. Again, why make an enemy when you don’t have to. The man knows things that you and I don’t and can read the tea leaves better than damn near anyone.

Again, he plays the hands he’s dealt and is pretty good at it, IMHO.

I agree with *most* of your post, but Ronna Romney was 100% Trump’s choice. The RNC always obeys a Republican President.

Other than Navarro, Lighthizer, Mnuchin, Ross, Miller, Kushner and his kids...name me one other person that obeyed Pres Donald J Trump. I’ll wait.

That man showed up to his inauguration with a back filled with knives.

There is no way the RNC, GOPe, Establishment or the Chamber of Commerce would ever cede any power to Pres Donald J Trump. They loathe him. They hate him with a passion.

Best of all, he knows it. And when given the opportunity, he f**ks them every chance he gets.

There was no way anyone but, McDaniel was going to win. Again, why pick a fight when you don’t have to.
