Residents alarmed as shoplifting incidents trigger store departures: ‘As a community we can’t allow this to continue’ (NY)

Lou Martins is angry, frustrated, and disappointed but not surprised that the first Target store to open in Manhattan — in his New York City neighborhood — is closing in October.

Target this week cited large-scale theft and safety concerns for employees and customers for its decision to close nine stores in New York, San Francisco, Seattle & Portand.

“I’ve seen shoplifting happening in that mall, in Target. I’ve seen cops chasing people carrying bags of products out of the mall,” said Martins, who lives and works a block-and-a-half away from the the East River Plaza shopping center in New York City’s East Harlem neighborhood. That’s the area where the 174,000 square-foot big box Target has anchored the mall since it opened in 2010. The facility also has a Costco, Aldi and Burlington stores.

“Having Target here helped revitalize East Harlem with hundreds of new jobs, customers and more services to our area. Now we’re going to have an empty box here,” he said. “Older residents depended on the Target for their essentials. They’re going to have to go further away to shop. It’s not easy for them.” A domino effect?

He’s especially concerned that Target’s departure will create a troubling domino effect. “We’ve had drugstores closing here, too, because of shoplifting. What if other stores leave? I can feel it. People here are worried about crime getting worse, from shoplifting to more violent crime. As a community, we cannot allow this to continue.”

The retail industry said it is grappling with a particular type of store theft that is more dangerous than petty shoplifting, called “organized retail crime” or ORC. This isn’t a crime of need where an individual grabs an item or two, such as baby formula or food.

Oh, sure you can allow this to continue. You are doing just that by your sickening WOKE attitudes and votes for persons who care more about the perpetrators than the victims.

"Shoplifting" is too benign a word to describe what this has become.

This is the black version of Kristallnacht.

This is the organized destruction of the white majority societal infrastructure, and the blue Democrat leaders are looking the other way and refusing to intervene, just like they did in 1938.

I wonder why the stores aren’t adopting a membership plan? That, and improved parking lot security, and it should curtail shoplifting. You can’t shoplift if you can’t enter the store in the first place.

Similarly ...

I saw an article a few days ago that some Albuquerque Walmarts are getting rid of some of the self-checkouts and replacing them with live checkers. Their reasoning: too much theft through the self-checkouts.

{snicker}

I stay out of the local Supercenter for that very reason — self-checkouts. They typically have one live checker and a line of people waiting. The local Walmart grocery recently renovated and replaced some self-checkouts with more live checkers.

Walmart is really pushing on-line buying. Many products can be delivered the next day. In some areas they now have 2-hour delivery.

The people in the black community who don’t want to lose all their stores to civilized communities need to protest for MORE POLICE AND TOUGHER SENTENCING RULES.

The black community can’t count on white guilt to solve their problems anymore. The rest of us are sick of paying cops to babysit black communities and for fighting for these folks to have stores they don’t deserve.

And the ‘no snitch’ rule? That needs to be tossed. Better neighborhoods don’t protect their criminals... they turn them in. Either ‘get real’ or start paying for your own police protection based on ‘taxing by community’ .... where the neighborhoods with the most crime pay more in taxes.

RE: I’ve seen cops chasing people carrying bags of products out of the mall....

Did he see Bigfoot and some space aliens, too?

When is the last time city cops were allowed to grab shoplifters? Followed by unlawful arrest lawsuit, civil court suits against cops and then back to allowing shoplifters to rush out with everyone watching helplessly.

Each city is different so maybe I missed the headlines about
“shoplifters arrested.”

Amusing way to reframe the crime by PBS site today:

“The National Retail Federation said its latest survey of members found that inventory loss cost retailers about $112 billion. But some industry observers say those numbers are not clear and may be masking other problems, including internal theft by employees.”

It’s true, most of the surveillance cameras are trained on employees.

“As a community” what do you propose to do about it? fire all the remaining police? Issue a sweetly worded communiqué requesting people please don’t ransack our stores?? Say,”Now yall be nice?”

I was wondering why Walmart, Tractor Supply, and Lowes keep wanting to ship things to me when we have local stores. It couldn’t be cost effective.

But you’ve enlightened me.

The only surprise is that it took this long for businesses to realize that it is only getting worse and that there is a certain political party that is actually encouraging lawlessness.

I think that there is a matter of scale here. Yes, there has always been "shoplifting" in stores; but, what is happening now is not really "shoplifting". It is grand theft, where an entire store is cleared out in a wave of "robbers of a certain color".

Don’t worry. The government will set up “free” stores where you can get anything you want and won’t have to pay, compliments of the people who actually go out to work.
