The Russians constantly and wrongly accuse Ukraine of being a Nazi nation. From the start, President Vladimir Putin has tried to justify his brutal war as a battle against Nazism.
And here was Zelenskyy, the victim of Canadian blundering, applauding a soldier who fought for the Nazis. Putin could hardly be more delighted...
The episode raises so many ugly memories and associations. That’s surely why the Liberals wanted to expunge Rota’s words from the record — a rare parliamentary measure.
This is typical of their attitude to history under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. It’s a political commodity to be massaged and shaped for their own reasons...
Rota is a sophisticated man who speaks English, French, Italian and Spanish. Impressive, but all the more reason why he should have been aware of his North Bay constituent’s record.
Giving special recognition to anybody from his riding was a cheesy political move, no matter what the person’s quality. This was a national and international event, not an occasion for local vote hunting...
A Zelenskyy visit comes with heavy security concerns, obviously. All guests for the speech would or should have been screened for both security and personal background.
If the PMO knew the name, and didn’t do the work, that makes the mistake potentially dangerous, and even more devastating for the government....

“Ukraine is a Nazi nation. Thats where the Nazis and SS fled to after fall of Berlin.”
The Ukraine as it was called, was a Nazi collaborator state during World War Two and The Holocaust. But it was part of the Soviet Union both before and after the war, run by Khrushchev and overseen by Stalin and the Kremlin. The Red Army presence there was enormous.

The original poster needs to get their geography right. Any surviving SS/Nazis took flight as far away from the Soviet Union as possible. Some ended up in the Middle East, serving as advisors to Syria and Egypt against Israel. Some went to Latin America.
Not only the Red Army, but it was chock full of Stalins NKVD/MGB secret police, who carried on their brutal repression as well as hunting down any surviving Nazi collaborators.
The Ukraine did not exist as a sovereign state after 1920 or so, when it was absorbed into the USSR. The Western Ukraine was part of Poland and was annexed by the USSR in 1939 when they invaded Poland.
We like to see history as black and white, good guys vs. bad but it is not. The fact that USSR fought and hunted down Nazis does not excuse or whitewash the horrors and crimes of Stalinism and Communistm.
The fact that anti-Communist Ukrainians like OUN-UPA, or this Hunka guy fought the Soviets and were co-belligierents with the Nazis does not excuse or whitewash any role they may have played in the mass murder of Jews, Poles, etc.
“Ukraine is a Nazi nation. Thats where the Nazis and SS fled to after fall of Berlin.”
This is such a stupid statement as to be laughable. You’re seriously saying that after Berlin fell the remaining Nazis ran into Soviet held territory. You do realize that almost no German prisoners made it home from Russia after the war, right?
Anyone even suspected of being a Nazi in Soviet territory was hunted down ruthlessly and exterminated.
L
“The Vatican” is fairly nebulous. Sort of like “Chicago.”
No doubt somepeople were aware of some individual Nazis, more were aware that there were some Naxis among the Germans, and even more would have thought it likely that there were Nazis among the Germans.
On the other hand, everyone was aware that there were Jews among the Jews.zi”
“Naxi” is also a rather flexible term. The particular “Naxi in question was a member of the SS but so far there is zero evidence for him committing any war crimes.
Pope Benedict was a member of the Hitler youth because every German boy was automatically enrolled at a certain age. Yes, in some peoples’ eyes that akes him a Nzzi.
Trudeau and Zelensky made a stupid mistake. They just gave Putin free propaganda to use in Russia.
