Liberal California has a state flag tied to the Confederacy. How can that be?
San Luis Obispo Tribune ^ | SEPTEMBER 21, 2023 | THE TRIBUNE EDITORIAL BOARD

Here’s a history lesson you’re unlikely to find in textbooks: California’s bear flag has links to white supremacy and pro-slavery. Here’s another: California entered the union as a “free” state, yet enslavement was widely condoned. As many as 1,500 enslaved African Americans lived in California in 1852. That completely contradicts what most of us learned in school.

Here are the most salient facts about the bear flag: A crude version was designed in 1846 by a small group of possibly drunken and definitely racist renegades who led the short-lived Bear Flag Revolt in an effort to break away from Mexico. (“They despised the native, Spanish-speaking Californios, whom they called greasers,” an op-ed in the Los Angeles Times reports.)

The opinion article goes on and on about how horrible the white people of California are and ultimately how we must pay repartitions

Maybe the bear is gay or trans.

Considering there are so many Democrats in California I have no doubt that they were and still are a slave state. They just call slaves by different names today.

The ‘San Luis Obispo Tribune’ is pretty damn hypocritical. A “tribune” was an ancient Roman official. And as we all know, the Romans kept slaves.

Yet the newspaper ignores this horrible fact! I demand that they cease publication immediately and permanently.

Last year, a high school district Board of Trustees in Sonoma voted to remove three plaques that the Native Sons had installed on school campuses. “These plaques, seeing them and knowing their history, it feels oppressive seeing them every morning as I enter the main building,” student KatieAnn Nguyen said, according to report by The Press Democrat. “If the group that donated these very plaques were openly racist towards Asian Americans, then as an Asian American, how can I begin to feel welcome at this school?”
The Native Sons of the Golden West fought in World War One World War Two the Korean War and the Vietnam War. They also welcomed Miss Nguyen's family from that paradise Vietnam.

Pretty thin article, I’m afraid. I’m pretty sure California wasn’t the only free state that had a few slaveholders passing through or even residing for a while. The institutions that existed in slave states (slave markets, militia to control them, etc.) did not exist here although having been peopled by people from east and midwest and south we had our share of people who were bigoted and/or supported slavery.

Back in 1970, when I was studying at Occidental College (on the western slope of Fiji Hill), I had a history professor who insisted that the Bear Flag was racist. He saw to it that the California flag was never raised over the campus--and it isn't to this day.

Later that fall, Sen. George Murphy (R-Calif.), who was running for re-election, put out a bumper sticker featuring the Bear Flag. I thought of sticking one of them on the door of the professor's office as a prank, but was unable to approach the door without being seen. Had I succeeded, he would have flipped his lid.

Everybody alive in 1846 was ‘possibly drunken and definitely racist’ by the ‘enlightened’ Tribune Editorial Board. How a flag first flown in 1846 has any ties to the Confederacy formed in late 1860 must involved some sort of time travel.

Idiots

In as much as it depicts a grizzly bear and not a black bear, I have to agree.

A truly diverse state would have all bears on its flag.

Kinda funny because the state was conservative when the flag was established. Now that their is a focus, I’m sure they will eventually change it.

Dude, whatever that is, it ain't no bear.

People who live in any place don't like large numbers of foreigners coming in. That's just the way it is. No need to agonize over it now.

Interestingly, the general the Bear rebellion captured wasn't opposed to US annexation. It did not end up that great for his family, as the new arrivals had clever lawyers who took land away from them.

That's nothing.
Before it became New York it was called New Amsterdam!
Why is that important?

Well ..

The Royal African Company

Chartered by Charles II in 1672 and headed by his brother the Duke of York for more than two decades, the Royal African Company held a monopoly on trade with Africa which included gold, silver and slaves.

From 1680-86, the company transported an average of 5,000 slaves per year, most of which were shipped to colonies in the Caribbean and Virginia.

Thousands of slaves arrived in the New World with the company’s initials branded on their chests.

Why did I think it important to post this very short history of a company that probably few have ever heard of?

New York!

Since the Virtue Signalers are demanding that everything that is offensive to blacks be torn down or renamed .. why not start with New York?

After all, New York was named after the great Trader of African Slaves, the head of The Royal African Company ... King James II, also known as the Duke of York.
(Heck .. The family that owns the New York Times were slaveholders!)
