Anne Murray – You Needed Me That song seems to have been inspired by the presidential election of 1920. I see references to the tear gas used to suppress widespread rioting in 1919 ("I cried a tear, you wiped it dry"), the Senate's rejection of the Treaty of Versailles ("I sold my soul, you bought it back for me"), Warren Harding's nomination at the GOP National Convention in Chicago ("I needed you, and you were there...I finally found someone who really cares"), The GOP platform ("you took my hand when it was cold"), Harding's "front porch" campaign from his home in Marion, Ohio ("you took me home"), his rousing jeremiads against the Democrats, ("you gave me hope when I was at the end and turned my lies back into truth again"), and America's rejection of Wilsonian progressivism and globalism by putting Harding in the White House ("you gave me strength to stand alone again...").

My mother liked to sing this while accompanying herself on our 1915 Steinway piano.

Jakety Jak--Billy Sanders (1958)
This is the German version of the Coasters' hit, but its lyrics bear little resemblance to those of the original. Among other things, Billy Sanders sings about a wedding in Zermatt, Switzerland and an actress who resembles Brigitte Bardot. I haven't fully translated the song--there seems to be no written version available, and I can't make out all the sung words--but the lyrics are heavily laced with 1950's German teenage slang, much of it borrowed from American English.
