A mistrial was declared after jurors failed to reach a verdict in the case of a violent Delaware robbery that left an elderly Asian jewelry store owner with serious head injuries.
Calvin Ushery Jr., a known repeat offender, is accused of attacking Chang Suh, then 68, inside Solid Gold Jewelers on West 9th Street in Wilmington on Sept. 15, 2022. Ushery allegedly grabbed the store owner, pistol-whipped him in the head, stomped on his head and then struck his head with a hammer before swiping items worth $100,000 and fleeing the scene.
A 68-year old Korean-American jewelry shop owner was pistol-whipped & assaulted with a hammer on Sept. 15 by a black male suspect during a robbery. Calvin Ushery, 39, was arrested. The victim is unable to walk now due to the head injury.
Suh, who managed to call the police before losing consciousness, suffered serious head injuries, including a severe concussion and internal bleeding. He received treatment at the intensive care unit.
Ushery, who was arrested a week later after trying to sell the stolen jewelry, was hit with robbery, assault and other charges and faced a total of 107 years in prison. But this week, a mistrial was declared after jurors were deadlocked following two days of deliberation.

What was the controversy in the jury about? Were they not certain the cops had arrested the right suspect?

Based on nothing at all, I’m going to say that the OJ-style jury didn’t think a black man should go to prison for killing an Asian woman.
We have all seen how spoiling a child creates self-destructive and incompetent adults. The same principle applies to communities and cultures.
One could hope they were demanding higher charges - such as attempted murder?
““Calvin Ushery Jr. deserves the maximum,” he said. “What you have seen in media just scratches the surface of what happened to my father. We feel that Calvin Ushery Jr. intended to murder my father by repeatedly bashing him in the head with a hammer.”
Ushery “has a lengthy criminal past and should not be on the streets, where he can terrorize elderly business owners ever again,” Steve Suh said. “We don’t want any other family to experience what we are going through.”

He thanked the people who have paid close attention to the incident, but said if his family had not decided to “take matters into our own hands,” he fears the case would have been kept “under wraps.”
“We appreciate the work of the Wilmington Police Department for putting this evil criminal behind bars,” Steve Suh said. “But we are having trouble understanding why the severity of the crime seems to have been papered over. “
We are rapidly approaching the moment when the justice system will be invalidated by vigilantes.

I suspect that you are right. There is clear video of the attack. This should have been an easy conviction.
However, the article is short on details (par for the course these days). I wonder if the defendant was charged with multiple offenses, and the jury could not decide on which one to go with. That’s the only thing that makes sense here, aside from the OJ thing you mentioned.
The police even found the getaway bicycle in the suspect’s home, identified the jewelry he tried to sell to a woman at a gas station, and have video of him selling large amounts of jewelry to two pawn shops a week after the heist. Perhaps there was a juror or two who simply didn’t want to convict him no matter what.

I was listening to talk radio on the way to work and an AA guy was talking about how he was robbed by another AA he knew. The host of the show asked if he called the police and the guy said that he didn’t want to put another brother in prison.
They are their own worst enemy.
The answer is simple. We need an asian mafia. Vigilante justice. Cops aren’t doing their job and the justice system won’t allow them to.
Koreans are an angry people. Just look at those merchants that fight back. Their anger separates them from other asians.
