General Motors has temporarily laid off most of the approximately 2,000 unionized workers at its Fairfax assembly plant in Kansas as a result of the ongoing UAW strikes.
The move, which GM had warned was coming last week, is the largest ripple effect so far from the United Auto Workers' historic strike against all three Detroit automakers as the union demands a new contract that offers substantially better wages and benefits.
But automakers have warned a strike threatens to make them uncompetitive against rivals, especially as the companies spend billions of dollars to transition to electric vehicles.

General Motors lays off 2,000 workers at Kansas assembly plant after workers at facility in Detroit went on strike because ‘there is no work’ - as UAW president threatens that MORE people will walk off the job by Friday if demands are not met
IF $10 Million is taken back from a CEO & given to 150,000 ‘workers’, each ‘worker’ will get $66.66 in a year’s time.
“workers” punch in & they punch out.
CEO’s work every hour of the day—7 days a week.
FIRE THEM ALL!!!!! Where is Reagan?
A strike is seen as the last resort that unionized workers have when bargaining with the, “evil company!’
I say, “stay at the bargaining table and hammer the differences out . Be realistic, both sides, and don’t hamstring the company or the union.
Unfortunately, the leaders will not bend and a strike happens, crippling both company and worker. Who wins? Neither side. Who suffers? The Public.
It is difficult to bargain with people who don’t understand business. In the end,
the unions are a plague to our economy.
but what if my over priced EV is delayed? How will I heat my garage without a blazing lithium fire?
Nothing of value was lost, GM doesn’t make anything worthwhile. Let alone quality.
Reagan wouldn’t have any say in this even back then. It’s not government related at all.
By the way, the plant shut down by this strike makes the Cadillac XT4 and Chevrolet Malibu. Nothing of value is being lost because both of those things are awful.
Lots of non union downstream supply workers will be hit hardest
One of our most arrogant in the crews began stirring up trouble and was trying to get us unionized. The CEO came to our meeting and promoted the guy to a managerial role. He even paid for his office space at a nearby industrial park. Reserved parking spot, nice furniture, and expense account.
30 days later he found the doors locked, and his keys didn't work. His cards were closed, his car was towed away by the leasing company.
The CEO told us we were no more valuable than trained monkeys in our jobs.
Not one of us ever complained after that. Best job I ever had really. This trained monkey had lots of freedom and was paid pretty good considering. I took a promotion to the corporate office in Connecticut after about 10 years of carrying a tool bag. I manned a hot-line for the repair guys around the country for troubleshooting and phone assistance while I produced engineering bulletins and technical manuals.
Fire all 2000 right now and give the jobs to the incoming Mexican slave laborers.
Price of autos gonna go up.
Striking against a shift to production of electrical vehicles which nobody wants to buy? You can’t make this $#*+ up, can you?
Those guys who got laid off can learn to code. That’ll come in handy as GM employs robots to build cars. Someone has to code software for the robots.
They already have. I just “totalled” my 2021 Ram 1500 a month ago. I can’t replace it because to purchase the same truck right now in a 2023 model is about 20,000 more than what I paid for the 2021.
My daughter is looking for a new car. I told him to stick with Honda or Toyota.
Good story.
AI will end up doing the coding.
