Donald Trump on Sunday said it was “my decision” to believe that the 2020 presidential election was “rigged” — saying he didn’t respect the aides and lawyers who’d told him he’d lost.
The former president, 77, was asked by NBC’s Kristen Welker on “Meet the Press” why he opted to ignore his “most senior lawyers” and campaign staffers about the election results.
“Because I didn’t respect them,” Trump replied.
Welker later asked the Republican frontrunner in the presidential primary whether he was “calling the shots … ultimately?”
“As to whether or not I believed it was rigged? Oh, sure,” Trump answered. “It was my decision. But I listened to some people.”

Last month, Trump attorney John Lauro publicly emphasized that his client’s actions to thwart the election results were done under the advice of counsel.
“Everything that President Trump did was with the advice of lawyers and counsel,” Lauro told NBC. “That’s an absolute defense to a criminal case.”
“This is a protocol you can follow — it’s legal.” ***
“Trump just threw his whole ‘following my lawyers’ advice’ defense under the bus. No, let me correct that: — not just under the bus but under a roaring, speeding, ginormous freight train . . . .,” Harvard University professor emeritus Laurence Tribe***
“And here is where Trump loses his defense that he relied on his lawyers,” attorney and former Rep. Barbara Comstock (R-Va.) said.
There goes the “advice of counsel” defense.
Seriously, if your defense *** is “@MZHemingway wrote a book” you know you’re going to lose at trial. https://t.co/8bfmW5Ku0S

Are you a lawyer.?
Trusting your own gut, and choosing to follow that, instead of listening to aides on the sideline? You consider that narcissism?
The problem becomes, TRUMP IS GIVING THEM HIS INTENT BY CONTINUING TO TALK ABOUT THE CASES! These interviews will be used in court, and it's unbelievable that he's doing this.
“This man should never be allowed near the White House again.”
Is that you, Nancy? Or are you Liz?
It was until Trump blew it up. It isn’t a good idea for a criminal defendant to go on the news and talk about his case.
Yes.
“I went to bed that night wondering why the counting was called off simultaneouleously in those battle ground states and the next day I declared the election had been rigged and stolen.
Am I a narcissist?”
No. Anyone with an ounce of common sense and a still working brain cell knows the election was stolen. It’s just that the dishonest ones will never admit it.
Is Trump trying to be honest or noble here by taking all the blame off of his attorneys? If so, he is hurting his case in the process. That’s not how “defense” is supposed to work. I don’t get it. Trump is smarter than that. What could his motivation be?
No, but possessing the inability to take responsibility or admitting one has made a mistake is.
Clearly a Trump character flaw.
Yeah, lawyers hate that.. Lawyers will always prefer a good lie over the truth every time..
Another negative story from thegaggamaggot troll.
How many do you post a day here?
You joined FR in 2017. What compelled you to join?
I had hopes the new Meet the Press would be refreshingly fair. No, the brown bitch was as bad as the lilly white faggot she replaced.
Trump cannot win. Face it.
Trump was doing his job as an elected representative of the people. It is his duty to question any and all political activities for the voters and question the activities of his subordinates without recourse as dictated by the Constitution and mandated by the people he represents. Their are no grounds for these indictments, Trump was doing his job to the best of his abilities as he ran the USA as a Capitalistic business for the benefit of the people who elected him.
He is sticking to his guns that he thought (thinks) the election was stolen.
Would you be happier if he said otherwise? What falsehood would make you happy?
Way to go Gene..!! You win the prize.... :)
These two are not mutually exclusive. He may have rejected his advisers and followed his attorneys advice on how to proceed.
Sorry, but having one so-called symptom of narcissism, doesn't make one a narcissist. Trump wasn't wrong about the election being stolen. If you believe that Sleepy Joe legally got the highest popular vote of any Presidential candidate in the history of this country, including Obama, by running his campaign from his basement during a scamdemic, then you need to have your head examined, because it didn't happen.
I agree with you.
It’s true the president is the chief executive of the federal government. A CEO is the chief executive officer of a corporation. However, the only similarity between CEO & chief executive of FedGov is the word ‘executive’. The reach ‘corporately’ and the power to execute a decision is much more limited for the ‘chief executive officer’ in FedGov and that is by design. I think at times Trump had trouble understanding that.
A lot of people here forgetting the whole “anything you say can and WILL be used against you.”
The prosecution will use interviews like this to claim he ignored advice of counsel
And that is the only answer.
Nobody said there has to be a consensus. He went with the guys who he respected and had the compelling evidence.
