Russian general says Eastern Europe is next, reminding us why we need to back Ukraine
The New York Post ^ | September 11, 2023 | Dalibor Rohac

If you think, like Elon Musk, that instead of fighting, Ukraine and Russia “should agree to a truce,” the recent interview with General Andrey Mordvichev, one of Russia’s top commanders in Ukraine, should give you pause.

Asked about the war’s expected duration, he said the quiet part out loud: There is still “plenty of time.”

According to him, “If we are talking about Eastern Europe, which we will have to, of course then it will be longer.”

In other words, the Kremlin is in the conflict for the long haul.

Not only it is committed, as Russian President Vladimir Putin himself stated on numerous occasions, to the destruction of Ukraine’s statehood, but its ambitions extend beyond Ukraine, encompassing Moldova and Georgia as well as our NATO allies in the Baltic states and Poland.

None of this is news to Eastern Europeans.

As the late former president of Poland Lech Kaczynski noted in 2008, after Russia attacked Georgia, “Today Georgia, tomorrow Ukraine, the Baltic States the day after tomorrow, and then perhaps the time will come for my country, Poland.”

America’s self-styled realists who believe a compromise can be reached with Putin — perhaps peace in exchange for some territory and promise of Ukraine’s neutrality — have a hopelessly unrealistic, naïve understanding of the Kremlin’s thinking.

Since Sep 8, 2023. Four and a half days old.

As you say, "all I said is that I support Desantis." Very clear.

LOL. Russia doesn’t have the conventional military capability to invade and occupy Europe. It is a nation of 142 million people, with an aging, declining population. The EU dwarfs Russia economically and demographically. And any invasion would trigger a NATO response.

Does it hurt your feelings if people post opinions different than yours ? Is there a rule that prevents newbies from posting their opinions?

America has a military presence in over 140 nations, while Canadians like you hold it's jock strap. Zelensky just cancelled elections in Ukraine, while Russia just held them in Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia.

Take your Biden chatter about democracy somewhere else.

The South Vietnamese acquitted themselves well. They fought on for two years after we left. It was Congress that cut off aid to the South that enabled the North to win.

Moreover, North Vietnam violated the Paris Peace Agreement and we failed to respond.

When I first read the general’s words I thought he was referring to the threats of Poland and other NATO countries coming to Ukraine’s defense with troops and air support. Maybe he was talking about WWIII.

You again. Last week you were telling us the Russians weren’t a threat because their nukes won’t fire. Now you’re telling us they’re ten feet tall and they’ll be on the English Channel before we know it. Well, which is it?

Did this General Mordvichev (who is a recently promoted active officer) make this statement or not? It is even reported in the Hindustan Times, not a source exactly “West friendly”.

“I back America..F’ Ukraine, Russia and Europe.”

I’m with ya. I wish JimRob would boot these foreign shills from both sides out of here. To start with, the one that pimps monetized YouTube channels, then the one that posts the Russian propaganda.

--- "Does it hurt your feelings if people post opinions different than yours ? Is there a rule that prevents newbies from posting their opinions?"

Thanks for the amusing questions. I have no feelings and think that Free Republic is exactly correct to allow differences of opinions.

Of course, there is no rule of which I am aware regarding "preventing." Have at it.

It is instrutive that "As you say, 'all I said is that I support Desantis;' very clear" seems for you somehow about feelings. I have no feelings about the matter. I merely found a new name, and thought to look. Curiosity.
