FDA rules TODAY that ingredient in Benadryl and Sudafed from pharmacy shelves don't work
Daily Mail ^ | September 12, 2023 | Cassidy Morrison

A Food and Drug Administration panel today unanimously ruled that a medicine used by millions for a stuffy nose does not work.

Phenylephrine is the most common active compound in over-the-counter drugs like Benadryl Allergy Plus Congestion, Sudafed PE, and Tylenol Cold and Flu Severe Day & Night.

But an FDA panel said after a two-day review that the oral decongestant ‘is not effective’ at standard or even high doses.

Their ruling is not binding but it strongly suggests that the agency could soon heed their advice and pull its approval, which would force companies to pull or reformulate their products.

The ingredient is protected under the FDA’s Generally Recognized as Safe and Effective (GRASE) designation, but a reversal of its approval could mean manufacturers including Bayer and Johnson and Johnson might need to reformulate.

You can still get it. They have it behind the counter and they run your DL# to see if your despicable then they will only give you 30 incase the meth itch just takes you over.

Adding Benadryl to the shopping list.

I rarely use it, but I’m allergic to berries and if I accidentally ingest them (oh, it happens), Benadryl has always done the trick.

FDA is no longer credible. They make drug companies pay so much (last time I checked :500 million) to get a new drug approved, the drug companies probably bought them out to own them.
Phenylephrine is a very potent vasoconstrictor when given intravenously. Ubiquitously used in ICU to raise dangerously low BP. But it is not absorbed well orally. I have used both benadryl and oral phenylephrine to useful effect when I have a cold. Gonna go buy a lot of it.

“Sudafed used to work. We used it to insure clear air passages when scuba diving.”

We used to call it Scubafed.

Then the druggies started using it to cook meth. Then they dumbed it down. Hasn’t worked since.

The only thing OTC that I've ever found that works is the old-formula Actifed, now only made off-label in the US by Walgreens.

Pseudoephedrine as a decongestant, and an actual effective antihistamine, triprolidine. The idea behind banning it was that it was too easy to "cook" the pseudoephedrine into Meth, but the elaborate restrictions have done less than nothing to reduce the availability or increase the street price of meth. It's just made it hard for people to get effective cold medicine. You can easily get as much as you need in the UK and EU, but the US system is all about performative narrative. Deeply broken in ways that are almost impossible to fix.

Well my daughter has allergies and takes Benadryl on the urging of her doctor. After about 10 years of using it I can say without reservation that it clearly helps her with congestion, there is no question of it. So that anecdotal evidence says to me that the FDA is either incompetent or has a hidden agenda.

And since this is current day, I know which one I suspect.

The astronauts used Actifed in some of the Apollo flights.

Big pharma isn’t going to be happy until every human being is on some kind of medicine. In Florida the TV commercials are insufferable. That and the injury lawyer ambulance chasers.

Phenylephrine is a very potent vasoconstrictor when given intravenously.

But destroyed in the gut.

How well would a nasal spray or sublingual/buccal work, I wonder...

It is time that FDA rulings be given the status similar to a “Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval”, with no more authority than that, and insurers and health care providers told it is best they do their own due diligence and/or seek outside expert opinion, and then do as they deem best for the patient.

True. It is relatively easy to chemically convert pseudoephedrine to meth...but nowadays there are so many other methamphetamine analogs being synthesized.. Not to mention that the plant which makes ephedrine is easily grown.
Pseudoephedrine probably no longer needed in the meth. synthesis game.

And me at a point where I can’t buy diddly squat in any quantity.

“Sorry, Folks, but you’ll have to talk to the FDA about my chronically runny nose, because they just took the last of my safeguards.”

Yeah. That’ll work in church.

But Covid jabs work and are safe and effective, huh?

For those that it doesn’t put underground or into the
burn chamber maybe so. I’ve had the shots and boosters
but have had no negative effects so far.

I could’ve told them this. PE doesn’t work. Real Sudafed does, but thanks to meth heads, you have to sign your life away to get just a few pills.

Phenylephrine replaced pseudoephedrine. You can’t make meth from phenylephrine.

You can get pseudoephedrine but it’s behind the counter at the pharmacy.

In this case the panel is right, phenylephrine doesn’t work.

The antihistamine diphenhydramine does work, they weren’t addressing that drug.
