I don’t understand the conservative revulsion against the Burning Man festival. It teaches self-reliance, self-responsibility, and civic coordination. As a conservative hippie myself, this is on my bucket list.
Probably because of rape of teens and drug use that have gone on there.
“It teaches self-reliance, self-responsibility, and civic coordination. As a conservative hippie myself, this is on my bucket list.”
The original Burning Man was closer to what you are describing.
Decades later it has gotten insanely huge and a place for the “cool people” to hang out with celebrities and show their fancy camping gear—just dumb at this point.
The trust fund teens are not real good at “self reliance”...
;-)
It’s sort of a friend-of-my-enemy thing.
Most folks here consider contemporary festival goers to be left of Abbie Hoffman. To be fair, a LOT of them are leftists. Further, witness the climate change video at the beginning of Burning Man 2023. Ergo, the whole lot should be cast aside.
They may be chiefly libertarians in the audience (that’s what I see at Bethel Woods and other similar places), but the folks running these things will likely be MIA if the SHTF, as we saw with Frye.
I’d go to Burning Man only if I had a prepaid Blackwater extraction team on the speed dial of my satellite phone.
When I was transferred to Reno for a few years I went hiking there quite a number of times - sure you can climb the mountains into the snow in the area and get quite the exhilarating thrill of it. However hiking solitary into the Black Rock desert is not for everybody, but I loved it. Wanted to be a day visitor to the festival but figured the 70’s would have been a better time as I would have fit right in, these days not so much.
I can’t imagine the place with substantial rain, must be a mudslide without the slide.
IF they were “Self Responsible” they would NOT leave the bicycles they buy to use for the event THERE & force the promoters to hire large trucks to go in & gather them all back up.
Cleaning up afterward is monumental.
Maybe next year.
Pure pagan debauchery. Drugs, nudity, promiscuous sex, homosexuality. Prove us wrong. Tell us the redeeming thing that would attract a conservative.
It's Babylon.

It attracts salacious headlines for its appearance of iconoclastic self-indulgence – a haven for hedonists, narcissists, exhibitionists and voyeurs.
You can treat it as an eight-day ecstasy-fuelled rave, spinning to the dance music that reverberates morning, noon and night.
You can spend all week in the orgy dome – a 24-hours-a-day “sex-positive consensual space where all can love and be loved”.

>> I don’t understand the conservative revulsion against the Burning Man festival.
I do understand the progressive sexually immoral doper climatista ATTRACTION to Burning Dope Festival. Maybe that’s why I have a visceral disgust for it.
Then too, I live in the country and practice self-reliance, self-responsibility, and civic participation EVERY DAMN DAY.
That was the idea years ago. Attendees who simply pay to be delivered by private airplane to an RV pre-stocked with food and beverages, including a chef and somebody to do the clean up work aren't really learning anything except what the landscape looks like.
Or how much work their stylist has to do to get good pictures with all the dust or this year's mud.
Burning Man is a Satanic celebration.
Santa Fe, NM has a similar
festival. Zozobra.
Was at the second Burning Man and agree totally
“conservative hippie” huh, yeah a bunch of freaks doing drugs in the desert; NIRVANA!
There are millions who practice self-reliance without the need to attend a freak show.
I don’t think I have any revulsion against Burning Man as an event. I suspect that it was much more of a spontaneously emerging event in its rising - probably very cool, but has succumbed to more of a popularized “I have to do this” thing.
One could envision that had Burning Man suffered these same rain events very early on it would have been relegated to the same place that the infamous Fyre Festival is now.
To me, the great one-time events are the best (worst?)....Woodstock won’t ever be equaled, neither will The Beatles Ed Sullivan Show appearance in 1964.
