Electric vehicles plagued by logistical issues, but few mention the elephant(s) in the room
American Thinker ^ | 09/01/2023 | Bob Kingsley

The push to exchange gas for electric in transportation is an idea that has ironically placed the proverbial cart in front of the horse. While the problems of an inadequate power grid, too few charging stations, short range, high costs, long recharging times, and battery fires are real, there are two gigantic issues looming that rival them all.

Current state and federal gas-tax regulations siphon off more than $53 billion a year in tax revenue; for reference, about 67 cents from every gallon of gasoline purchased in New York, and around $1.18-per-gallon in California. Those taxes account for more than a quarter of the expense of road and highway costs around the nation.  No such system of taxation exists for electric vehicles. For every ten-percent reduction in gas vehicles being replaced by electric, a resulting decrease of more than $5 billion in tax revenue will occur. Add this to the long list of issues that the rush-to-electric crowd has failed to address.

But the second concern is a direct threat to our freedom, our autonomy, and our God-given right to be left alone, the abuse of which fits nicely into the leftist wish-list of control.

The electrical connection from charger-to-car doubles as a stealthy surveillance tool. Every interaction records the time, date, location, mileage, etc. “Gassing up” now means interfacing with the computing system of the vehicle to potentially deliver any and all of the data contained in the vehicle, which are extensive.

Charging at home, with the advent of “smart meters,” consumers can “program” their vehicles to charge at off-peak power times in order to save money — this same smart meter of course is also recording the time, date, duration of charge, and potentially more data

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer is already pushing the envelope, taking advantage of the surveillance aspects of the modern-electric vehicle, and simultaneously solving the lost-revenue problem. Whitmer proposed using GPS technology to track driven miles data in order to tax driving based upon usage.

While most people don’t think of lost freedom when it comes to these technological issues, it is time we did. Incrementalism is the hardest-to-identify poison because it kills you gradually and slowly, while providing what seems to be a nice service that makes your life easier and better.

Texas is way ahead of this electric car crap.

$400 fee is tacked on to annual registration of EVs, plus our annual inspection requirement for all vehicles (i.e. mileage reporting) ends in 2025.

It's delicious to think of smug-faced EV owners writing that check. Thank you very much chump - now you can help pay for repairs on the highways that your overweight EV is tearing up.

It’s easy to add tax at the charging station, I would guess; tracking obviously would be for other purpose. The real elephant in the room is “go green, go without” subtitle “ You will own nothing and you will be happy”

no worries

evs will not really replace gas cars

most will be on public transportation

the purpose of the ev ruse is to destroy private transportation

They could scrap the gas tax and use the general fund, but nope. Better to have a surveillance requirement.

Some states think they have a solution to the gas tax problem. Tax based on mileage instead. Maybe twice a year you go to some designated spot. Some guy reads your odometer. You get a bill in the mail.

My state is also considering putting cameras on every bridge. Cross a bridge, get a bridge tax bill in the mail.

Side note: Some folks will toss those bills in the trash. Then what? Their car registrations will probably be suspended. And they’ll drive anyway.

Electric vehicles plagued by “logical” issues

Is more the truth of it...

The author of this article does not realize when you gas up your car with gasoline unless you pay with cash, and pull up to the pump with your license plate covered, you are probably being tracked, anyway.

Based on the current number of personal automobiles/SUVs/pickups on the road, every 1% that switch from ICE to BEV (battery-only electric vehicle, AKA a “plug-in”) will require 2 additional nuclear power plants, not to mention the accompanying boosting of the grid infrastructure.

That means that a 50% switch would require 100 new nuclear power plants, and we’ve brought exactly two (2) new ones online this century, with 10 more on the drawing board but not yet under construction.

Not only that, the average operational lifespan of a nukular power plant is 42 years. The only two currently online that aren’t already at least 42 years old are the two brought online in 2013. So even without the drain caused by BEVs, we’re already 40+ years behind on maintenance.

And what’s the timeframe for every new nuke now, from funding to environmental impact studies to land acquisition to construction to flipping the switch, ... 20 years?

Starting September 1st New Hampshire has a $100 surcharge for EVs and $50 for plug in hybrids.

Excellent article. Big Brother is watching.

It will be interesting to see what states will do to make-up for the lost revenue from gasoline taxes.

EVs are waaaay heavier than ICE vehicles and thus chew up roads faster as well..........

Exactly, the grid cannot support all of them anyway.

Smart meters...

So if your EV doesn’t go up in flames, there’s always your smart meter to worry about.

Sounds like a twofer for Deep State.

Most existing homes in this country still do not have 200A services.

EVs are made with fossil fuels, the conversion/transport of the minerals into batteries, the plastics, the metals, the tires (very little natural rubber in modern tires)
