New York police will use drones to monitor backyard parties this weekend, spurring privacy concerns

Those attending outdoor parties or barbecues in New York City this weekend may notice an uninvited guest looming over their festivities: a police surveillance drone.

The New York City police department plans to pilot the unmanned aircrafts in response to complaints about large gatherings, including private events, over Labor Day weekend, officials announced Thursday.

“If a caller states there’s a large crowd, a large party in a backyard, we’re going to be utilizing our assets to go up and go check on the party,” Kaz Daughtry, the assistant NYPD Commissioner, said at a press conference.

The plan drew immediate backlash from privacy and civil liberties advocates, raising questions about whether such drone use violated existing laws for police surveillance

“... “Deploying drones in this way is a sci-fi inspired scenario.”

...

Mayor Eric Adams, a former police captain, has said he wants to see police further embrace the “endless” potential of drones...

But as the technology proliferates, privacy advocates say regulations have not kept up, opening the door to intrusive surveillance that would be illegal if conducted by a human police officer.

“One of the biggest concerns with the rush to roll out new forms of aerial surveillance is how few protections we have against seeing these cameras aimed at our backyards or even our bedrooms,” said Albert Fox Cahn, the executive director of the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project (STOP).

...

“Clearly, flying a drone over a backyard barbecue is a step too far for many New Yorkers,” Cahn said.

I don’t think mask mandates will be coming back. There would be a huge mutiny, even in the blue cities. The Deep State will likely pull another type of stunt.

Tens of millions in police helicopters are not enough.

Now they need super quite drones that will fly down to window level with their video cameras.

Perhaps you're right, but following the politics in my birth city of Seattle, they would happily and obediently put on masks again and hide in their basements.

And if the cops don’t maintain LoS while flying the drone, then they broke the law and need to change it. Which they won’t do on both counts.

That’s because in the nice neighborhoods and buildings they don’t kill each other at BBQs and holiday parties.

I’ll bet not one average Joe citizen wanted this law to be inflicted on them.

A permit for a backyard BBQ?

Screw that. I don’t want or need the government’s permission to cook outside and have a few friends over.

Possibly hundreds of people being high and/or drunk and/or disorderly in the middle of a residential area, street without a permit?

Now I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t want that going on in my neighborhood.

My problem is that cops never show up until someone’s dead or injured.

Is it now illegal to have fun in one’s own backyard?

The left doesn't want ANYONE to have fun. Their idea of fun is controlling others and they cannot stand it when someone else does something they don't approve of.

There cannot possibly be a more humor challenged, control freaks and bunch of wet blankets around.

I haven’t found anything that requires a permit for that.

If the cops are buzzing those folks instead of policing the hundreds of people being drunk and disorderly...

Well, let’s just say I have no sympathy for them if something untoward happens to their eyes in the sky.

10 people?
25 people?
100 people?
500 people?

How large is “large”?

I don’t think these are the sort of backyard Labor Day Weekend BBQs that you or I would throw for a few friends.
