"After the Taliban shut universities for women, my only hope was to get a scholarship which would help me study abroad," says 20-year-old Afghan student Natkai.
Natkai's name has been changed for her own safety.
The Taliban have cracked down hard on women who oppose them.
Natkai says she kept studying even though there was little chance of her ever attending university in her homeland.
Then she was granted a scholarship to study at the University of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from Emirati billionaire businessman Sheikh Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor.
The scholarships for Afghan women were announced in December 2022 after the Taliban banned women from university.
The BBC understands a total of 100 Afghan women have been successful in gaining these scholarships. Some Afghan students living abroad have already travelled to Dubai.
On Wednesday 23 July, Natkai said goodbye to her family and set off for the airport.
But her hopes were soon dashed.
"When the Taliban officials saw our tickets and student visas, they said girls are not allowed to leave Afghanistan on student visas," she tells me, her voice breaking.

Nobody can convince me with the US miltech we know about, let alone the US miltech we don’t know about, we couldn’t erase the Taliban “leadership” in about a week.

Had friends who served in Afghanistan. A surprising (to me and them) number of women were as bad as the jihadist men supporting the Taliban. Don’t ask me why. Made no sense to me or them.

What liberals ignore with their “diversity-is-good” mantra is that if you allow total diversity, you also allow slavery, child labor, female mutilation, and probably perversities I can’t imagine. One day the HR manager where I worked “snuck” into my cube, looking around to be certain no one had seen him. He sat, leaned forward and cupped his hands whispering, “A black technician reported you for ‘politically incorrect thinking.’” My mouth fell open. “No, no,” he said, “This is serious. I can ignore it this once, but if it happens again, you’re out of here. I recommend you never, ever speak to a black again.” (I didn’t.)
The tech had recently left the Army and he’d been in Kuwait. I enjoyed getting his low-down on the culture and his experiences. But the subject got onto female circumcision. His take was it was fine because “it’s their culture.” My take was, well, not when they come here. He was obviously upset with my view, so I said, still very friendly, “well, let’s agree to disagree.” No raised voices, just a conversation. But he’s okay with anything that can be described as, “It’s okay because that’s their culture.” That would be sex with children, slavery, mutilation...anything because, hey, diversity-is-good.
SIDE NOTE: I am not criticizing conservative women or women in general.
