Dollar Tree is planning to lock up some of its merchandise and may discontinue the sale of certain products, as theft makes a dent in the company’s profit margins.
Richard Dreiling, Dollar Tree’s CEO, said on a call with analysts Thursday that the company is introducing new measures in the second half of the year to combat “shrink,” or the loss of inventory from theft and other causes.
“We are now taking a very defensive approach to shrink,” Dreiling said, noting that such inventory losses “advanced a little further than what we had anticipated.”
Dollar Tree and Family Dollar, both of which are owned by Dollar Tree Inc., will begin to move some items behind the checkout stand or lock up others, he said. However, in some cases, merchandise may simply be discontinued if stores are unable to keep it on the shelves, Dreiling added.

Dollar Tree near me hasn’t locked up items near me either. Same with other stores (aside from the small high dollar items that have been locked in cases for many years).
6.95
To be fair to Dollar Tree, they had prices for $1 a lot longer than I expected. I’m surprised they took as long as they did to raise to $1.25.
I was laid off about 10 years ago, and Dollar Tree became a lifesaver, for me.
Two things happened, at about the same time, after Bye-done was installed as pResident. Prices went up to $1.25, and sizes shrunk by 33%. Many of the items I bought there are now 100% higher priced, per unit, as they once were.
I don’t shop there on a monthly basis, anymore....
Due to inflation, Dollar Tree should change its name to Five Dollar Tree. /s
Odd that there was no mention of specific locations, or if the theft is being experienced nationwide.
If you try and steal a $1.25 item near my Dollar Tree you have an excellent chance of getting shot by an armed citizen.
What, people can’t help themselves to whatever they please anymore?
What they gonna lock up, the purple drank?
Don’t paint with such a wide brush.
Not every “community” in America is having this problem.
I stayed at the Bellagio in May and laughed myself silly that all the condoms in the CVS across the street were behind glass.
At least condoms in Vegas and not wanting to be seen next to the person you’re going to use them with makes sense.
We don’t speak of the elephant in America’s living room.
I've also been wondering what Dollar Tree items are most popular among the thieves. A real head scratcher. Just a lot of relevant information left out of this article.
“I’ll steal that for a dollar!”

Their primary customer base these days, right?
