On June 23, a study on the underreporting of firearm ownership was published in the Journal ” Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology.” The title is “Predicting potential underreporting of firearm ownership in a nationally representative sample,” hereafter referred to as the ‘study.’ The study indicated the number of people who refuse to report they are firearm owners, who have been called “shy” firearms owners, are about as numerous as firearms owners willing to identify themselves as such.
The full study is behind a paywall online. Allison E. Bond, the principal author of the study, was very kind and sent a copy for me to read for this article.
The study used a sample of 3500 people who were chosen to be a representative of United States adults. The number of adults in the United States at the time of the survey was about 258 million. They found 34.6% of those surveyed admitted to owning firearms, about 89 million people. The study estimated another 29.6% of respondents were likely to be “shy” gun owners. This would put the total number of gun owners in the US at roughly 64% of adults, or 166 million people.
The number of “shy” firearms owners has been a major uncertainty overhanging the study of firearms ownership and its effects in the United States. The study approached the uncertainty from the perspective of interest in understanding and preventing suicide in the nation’s population. While the study acknowledged 50% of suicides in the US involve firearms, it did not mention the percentage involving firearms has fallen from about 60% in the early and mid-1990s.

Good! I hope it’s 3x’s!
Is that considered "baiting"?
Should I not do that?
Wait ‘till they find out most gun owners own more than one......many WAY more. 😏
When that fateful day arrives, anyone who ever had any type contact with the FBI or any federal agency regarding a backroad check or anything gun related will eventually receive a visit from federal security.
I believe that is correct. I also believe that not only are many people “shy” about admitting to owning guns, the shyness really shines when asked to divulge how many guns do you own. I cannot think of anyone that I know who only owns one.
Beware the man who owns only one gun. He may know how to use it!
Agreed, but do you know a man who only owns one? Not many, IMHO. And I hope with all my being, that if and when the situation presents itself, whether you own one or dozens, you can protect you and your loved ones from hurt.
Several years ago my Primary Care Dr asked me if I had any firearms in the home. I gave him my best Chili Palmer answer - “no. not really”.
None of my doctors has ever asked me about guns.
Do you have any rugs in your bathroom?
I believe that is none of your business.
Do you have a smoke detector in every room?
I believe that is none of your business.
Do your own any guns?
I believe that is none of your business.
After we had gone through the list he smiled at me and said, "apparently anything not directly medical is none of my business?"
I said "yep".
After that we got along fine. Good doctor, was sorry when he retired.
Gee. Who woulda guessed?
Firearm owners are like women shoe owners. There is no way one gun or one pair is enough.
It should be mandatory, we’d have a much more polite society.
Are they correlating poll responses with boating accidents?
My BIL was a bit of a hand gun collector.....back in the 90s he asked me to hang on to his collection until he could find a new apartment since the ones he was in were going downhill.
Not knowing how many he had, I figured 2 or 3 maybe. Imagine my surprise when he showed up at the front door with a duffle bag. We took inventory just to make sure we both knew how many he brought over.....22 hand guns.
When he passed away he only had 6 or 7.
We decided to sell them and give the proceeds to his single daughter that has 2 kids.
I think the longest it took to sell one was probably 5 days......and NOBODY haggled the asking price either.
I know a number of people who are very closed-mouthed about their gun ownership. They will readily talk about guns only after knowing you and knowing that you own guns.
Really?! No idea?
Guns? My guns identify as justice wands….so my answer is no.
