Nato may be about to sell Ukraine short – and make itself irrelevant
The Telegraph via Yahoo ^ | August 19th, 2023 | Colonel Richard Kemp

Nato appears to have abandoned hopes of a Ukrainian victory. Speaking in Norway, secretary general Jens Stoltenberg’s chief of staff, Stian Jenssen, said that a peace deal might involve Kyiv ceding territory to Russia in return for Nato membership.

His comments sparked fury in Ukraine, and rightly so. While Jenssen later apologised for the way he had expressed his views, he did not retract them. Stoltenberg’s subsequent insistence that peace talks will happen on Kyiv’s terms will not have quashed suspicions that Jenssen has revealed how the West really sees the war.

A recent US intelligence assessment indicated that Kyiv’s counteroffensive will fail to achieve its objective of cutting Russia’s land corridor to Crimea. The gloomy conclusion drawn by some is that despite ongoing offensives by both Russia and Ukraine, neither side will make gains of strategic significance.

The answer to this apparent stalemate is not to pressure Ukraine into conceding Russian annexation of its land, but to change the facts on the ground. That can only be done by redoubling efforts to supply Kyiv with sufficient combat resources to drive Russia out, if not this year then next.

The US and NATO are in it "as long as it takes" and "whatever it takes".

Who could have possibly believed it then, much less now?

The borders in Europe moved back and forth for a thousand years without any help from the US. Let the Euros deal with this. It’s their problem — not ours.

Some people like war, and hope it goes on forever.
Other people feel differently.

If the fighting stops in Ukraine, the CIA will start it up someplace else.

There is no “peace plan” other than beating Russia by bleeding them dry in Ukraine. If this is a war of attrition, all will be depleted with the “whatever it takes, as long as it takes” non-plan. Arms dealers and morticians are the only winners.

Speaking in Norway, secretary general Jens Stoltenberg’s chief of staff, Stian Jenssen, said that a peace deal might involve Kyiv ceding territory to Russia in return for Nato membership.

Stoltenberg backtracked his chief of staff's comments:

NATO backpedals as Ukraine fumes over land for membership gaffe

Jenssen said out-loud what NATO is discussing internally. And Jenssen's "misstatement" wasn't an accident. There are serious divisions within NATO on how to proceed in Ukraine.

It won’t matter. Whatever happens, they will declare it a victory and shove it down the memory hole as fast as they can.

“Nato may be about to sell Ukraine short – and make itself irrelevant”

Ukraine was ALWAYS short...what’s happening now is that NATO is dealing with the reality of also being ‘short’.

I remember the 1980s, when the Leftists were demanding that we cut our military by 50%. Then the Cold War ended, and we wound up cutting our military closer to 67%. Crappy time to start world wars with superpowers...after dropping out of that league.

“Jenssen said out-loud what NATO is discussing internally. And Jenssen’s “misstatement” wasn’t an accident.”

OBVIOUSLY - This is a standard political move to say something, expect blowback, then backtrack. The objective here is to gauge the amount of blowback, so as to guide the next move. Since I don’t know their criteria for ‘approval’ to jettison Ukraine, I don’t know their next move - but we will see soon enough.

NATO passed its usefulness in 1991 when the USSR imploded. If they wanted to keep it as an active coalition then they should have revamped it to include Russia. That would have effectively defanged China. But more importantly, it would have alleviated much of Russia's national security concerns.

Like any other sovereign nation, they do have a right express & posses national security concerns.

Anyone that refuses to acknowledge that right, is ignoring basic tenets that our nation was founded upon.
