Thien Ho was a legal giant when he was elected to be Sacramento’s new district attorney last year. He was an elite prosecutor who secured the conviction of the infamous Golden State Killer, among other high-profile suspects.
One of the questions The Bee Editorial Board had about Ho when he was a candidate for DA was whether he could transition from ruthless prosecutor attacking his targets to statesman district attorney leading an office that’s supposed to be about justice. The answer to that question is no, apparently.
In recent weeks, Ho has used his office to threaten the city of Sacramento to police homelessness as he believes they should, or else. Ho is selectively targeting Mayor Darrell Steinberg and other elected city leaders for failing to enforce city code violations.
On an emotional level, Ho’s message resonates. Citizens are fed up with sidewalk campers, mentally ill people, hypodermic needles, aggressive panhandlers, trash, human waste and all of the other negative impacts suffered most acutely within the urban core of the capital of California.
But what justice is there in prosecuting elected city leaders for being overwhelmed by a homeless crisis proliferating in cities far beyond Sacramento? This is a question all citizens should be asking our DA right now. Ho was elected to prosecute criminals. He was not elected to threaten other elected leaders because he doesn’t like how they are dealing with homelessness.

Whether the CITY of Sacramento, Darrell Steinberg or the Sacramento Bee like it or not.
And the City officials would do well to enforce the law, lest they get this hornet in their bonnet.
“Instead, Ho is doing what he did as an elite prosecutor: He’s making threats. He’s targeting the city’s elected leaders as he would crime suspects.”
Well, California is a dictatorship. Any last questions should have been Larry Elder( the black face of white supremacism) versus the greaseball golden boy who probably has photos of chairman Mao on the living room wall.
Having lived in Sacramento area for thirteen years, I know that the Bee is a left-wing socialist democrat ass-kissing rag and Marcos is a constant aggrieved whiner who sees racism around every corner. I haven’t bought a copy since 2005.
The Sacramento Bee has always been the paper of record for the political class in Sacramento. Always good to use that filter with them.
Sounds like a future mayor. Or governor. Couldn’t possibly do worse than the current clown parade occupying these offices.
“But what justice is there in prosecuting elected city leaders for being overwhelmed by a homeless crisis proliferating in cities far beyond Sacramento?”
If they’re failing to enforce city codes, which is what they were elected - and are paid - to do, then it’s EXACTLY that, justice.
I wonder how many vagrants the writer of this piece has taken in.
whether he could transition from ruthless prosecutor attacking his targets to statesman district attorney leading an office that’s supposed to be about justice.Uhm, so he wasn't pursuing justice before? Dumass lib jornos: justice is justice, but you just think justice is just for what you want, just not for anyone else.
Any guy who started to crack down on the homeless issue
would be criticized. These folks all want it to get better,
but if someone touches on their sacred cow, all hell breaks
lose against them.
I don’t know this guy or the Sacramento specific issue, but
the state has reached to breaking point on several issues,
and someone has to do something, even if some folk’s toes
get stepped on.
Whoa, you mean to tell me there’s a DA who actually wants to do the right thing?
Wow. Expecting the mayor and other elected city leaders to enforce city code violations. What nerve you have, Mr. Ho.
“... He’s targeting the city’s elected leaders as he would crime suspects.”
Because they are criminals.
“Whoa, you mean to tell me there’s a DA who actually wants to do the right thing?”
Let’s just call him the future governor.
The people LOVE him. Because he is doing the right thing and enforcing the law.
Sounds good, if only the people actually got to choose.
Sounds like a ringing endorsement to me. I could be wrong however...
