One of the largest cities in Canada's north is being evacuated amid warnings that a wildfire could reach it by the weekend.
The 20,000 residents of Yellowknife, the capital of the Northwest Territories, have been given until noon Friday (18:00 GMT) to leave.
As of Thursday morning, the fire was within 16km (10 miles) of the city.
Another fire is threatening the community of Hay River.
One evacuee told the CBC her car began melting as she and her family drove through embers while fleeing that town.
The Northwest Territories declared a state of emergency late on Tuesday as it battles nearly 240 wildfires.
Mike Westwick, the territory's fire information officer, has said that in the absence of rain, there is a chance the blaze will reach the outskirts of Yellowknife by the weekend.
"We're doing absolutely everything we can first and foremost to slow the growth and prevent that fire from making it to Yellowknife," he told broadcaster CBC early on Thursday.

There’s nothing like a little natural disaster to divert the peoples attention. Like they say, never let a good crisis go to waste - even if your own policies created it. Of course you cannot rule out that the wildfire isn’t a natural disaster. Hint hint nudge nudge.

Nobody seems interested how these many mysterious blazes get started.
No lightning storms preceded the blazes. The blazes seem to magically start at several sites simultaneously.
Wow, that’s an incredible map. There’s no way to get that under control. Nature will have to do it with cooler temps, rain and snow.
In three weeks, we are supposed to head out on our car trip through Seattle, Vancouver, Whistler, the Okanogan Lake Region, Kamloops, Revelstoke, and over to Banff, Jasper, and Lake Louise. We may have to cancel if the smoke is blowing into BC.
We’ve got enough of our own smoke here in North Idaho from the nearby Ridge Creek fire that’s now up to 3,500 acres. They are hitting it every day with planes, heavy equipment, and 500 personnel. It’s still only 12% contained due to the really tough terrain and hot weather.
When MAGA takes power again, we can rename things to undo all the leftist renaming of things to blot our history. Obviously, the natural inclination is to just revert to original names, but we need to be in their faces. We can take things that extra step. After renaming every MLK Blvd to Al Jolson Way, we can rename Lake Okeechobee in Florida to Great Slave Lake. That’s a twofer, we can piss off blacks and injuns at the same time. (That’s satire folks.)
Prayers up for one of my favorite YooToobers, Yellowknife resident Jay Legere, who just now, after years of waiting, was permitted to purchase a cabin. Last vid he said that he really hasn’t had a chance to form an emotional attachment to it yet but some of his neighboring cabins have been in their owners’ families’ hands for generations. If they stay to fight it, they’re dead.
